Did a trail run round the area after a week of work travel and relative inactivity.
Loads of friendly people out walking, running or just enjoy the area.

My husband and I look for places to visit now that we are retired. This is a stunning place to walk and enjoy nature at its best. The visitor's center on Warner is excellent to learn about the various wildlife at the preserve. Saw egrets, ducks, and geese enjoying the beautiful day.

How folks don't know about Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is beyond me as it is RIGHT THERE along the PCH near Huntington beach, but we love is as Our Own special spot.

Hundreds of acres of flat trails and wetlands. Tons of birds and fish (and lizards and bunnies, if you pay attention). Free parking. Docents on many weekends to tell you what species you are seeing, or well informed visitors who will do the same.

You can easily walk for 3+ hours and not cover the same ground twice. GO!

Just spent 6 days in the area and visited here 5 times, and never did the same walk twice. Two parking lots, one on the PCH the other on Warner, and multiple paths from each gives you at least 10 miles of unique trails to enjoy. Some paved, most are flat with stone dust, some are sandy or rougher, but all are gorgeous.

SO Many Seabirds and others, too. Usually see Blue Herons, also see Kestrels and Red Tailed Hawks, and Osprey. Sometimes see Turkey Vultures. SO MANY DUCKS! And pelicans!

A short hike great for anyone interested in wetland ecology. Lots of wildlife can be seen throughout the hike. Fairly clean, although saw a few manmade objects in the water with barnacles growing all over them.

It doesn't look like much, especially since the east side of the reserve looks like a dried up waste land. Mid day in September was hot and sunny but there was a lot to see. Definitely bring water because you'll walk more than you thought. I was glad I had binoculars to check out the bird species. Slilts, blue heron, cormorants, tons of little shore birds, and others we couldn't identify . There were joggers and people ignoring rules about dogs and bikes. We spent time in the nature center and because it was saturday, the intern was feeding the snakes live mice (a one a week event we were told). Nothing the tender hearted should watch, but still cool. The aquatic animals in the center were interesting to watch too.
Did I mention that it's free? You can buy merch or even water to help support their facility.

We stopped by for quick walk. Ocean breeze was rewarding and refreshing. Trail doesn't look like much but you will encounter a ton of wildlife. We saw multiple heron, pelicans, cranes, egrets, skates and a shark in the water. Great little walk for families.

Awesome jogging trail! Plus the backdrop of Pacific Ocean. Love to get exercise on this trail since we live quite close. Parking is very limited so recommend use Uber.

With the recent Pandemic of COVID-19, the world has become a scary place. You can escape by visiting the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve where you can hike, run, view the wildlife, and get your exercise in at the wetlands with the refreshing ocean breeze. Bolsa Chica State Beach is across Pacific Coast Highway, so the ocean view is a plus. The wildlife, migratory birds, and natural environment are refreshing along your peaceful 4 mile walk/run by the ocean. The hours are 6am to 8pm and it's free.
