Take a tour off Highway 99 and visit Fresno's best kept secret. *A hand-built network of underground rooms, courtyards and passageways reminiscent of the ancient catacombs. *Unique fruit producing trees, shrubs, and vines growing underground - some over 90 years old! *Ancient Roman architecture - arches, vaults and stone-built walls. *Underground micro-climates - temperature variations of 10 to 30 degrees! *Underground home of Sicilian visionary and self-taught artist/builder Baldassare Forestiere.

This beautiful, awesome site is such a wonderful place to spend some time! Went with a Fresno resident who had never been there. A surprise for both of us. Truly a marvel. How this site was built is truly a phenomena. Thank God it is...More

Stopped on a whim, driven by several times, did not even know it existed. About an hour of time but a great human interest story with some unique ideas about dealing with the Fresno heat.

Loved finding this gem. It was so interesting and informative and who knew something like this is in Fresno. Would recommend to anyone in the Fresno area to go visit this site.

I had watched the Huell Howser episode on this and was intrigued. The episode did not do this home and gardens justice and I don’t think it could! Today a place like this could never be built. I do hope they are able to keep...More

It turns out a certain Baldasar Forestiere came from Sicily to Fresno in the early 20th century, intending to go into citrus faming. He bought 40 acres of flat land, but soon found that a thick layer of impervious rock (hardpan) lay just under the...More

This is a remarkable underground attraction, the result of one man’s vision and the loyalty of his heirs. It far exceeds other subterranean creations we have visited. Our guide, Rhanda, was excellent. Allow an hour for the tour itself.

it was something else - a person with persistence, motivation and a will to do something different i believe made the impossible - his own catacomb and canals - ingenious engineering - well done Mr Forestiere

This is a unique place to visit and completely unexpected. It is the work of an Italian immigrant who made the most of land he purchased but was unable to grow much on it. It is a story of extraordinary perserverance of one man who...More
