About
The Nivola Museum in Orani is an institution devoted to the work of Costantino Nivola within the larger context of contemporary art, landscape and living traditions. The museum was established in 1994, a few years after the death of Nivola (Orani, 1911- East Hampton,1988) and has been expanding ever since. The permanent collection holds more than two hundreds sculptures, paintings and drawings by Nivola, who played a unique role in 20th century modernism as an artist who worked closely with architects. Aside from exhibiting Nivola’s work, the museum produces temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. These center mainly on the relationship between art, architecture, and landscape, with a special focus on artists and movements that were close to Nivola, whose friends included Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock, Saul Steinberg, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder and many other protagonists of mid-20th century art.

On a warm August afternoon we decided to visit this beautiful museum in one of the most typical villages of the Sardinian mountains. Although I was born and raised in Sardinia, I had only a superficial knowledge of the person and works of Nivola that, fortunately and thanks to the very good Guide Anna who accompanied us on the visit, today I can say that I have filled. If you are in Sardinia do not miss the museum. It is really worth giving up an afternoon at sea!

A beautiful modern museum filled with sublime work by Constantino Nivola inside and out. Lovely setting overlooking the town of Orani. We spent a few hours there and it was well worth it as part of our 3-week exploration of this charming island. A nice balance to the natural wonders with which Sardinia is full to overflowing.

We were wonderfully surprised by this exceptional contemporary art museum, highlighting the works of artist Costantino Nivola (1911-1988). This modern museum has a stunning and tranquil setting on the hillside overlooking the small village of Orani. There are several buildings surrounded by lovely landscaping and centered on a peaceful plaza. You can view Nivola's work indoors and outdoors. His most recent sculptures are superb! One could easily spend an hour or so to enjoy the art, stroll the gardens and soak in the views with a cup of coffee or refreshment which is served at the small, onsite cafe. Entry is a modest 5 euros, and there are special exhibits beyond Nivola's art. We highly recommend including a visit in your itinerary to central and northern Sardinia.

Going away from the coast and inside Sardinia is always a discovery journey. Even more rewarding when you discover such a hidden gem. The museum is really well placed in the birthplace of Costantino Nivola, a Sardinian sculptor and artist that has been active especially in New York. And this small museum displays a great retrospective of his job. A must see.

Beautiful works of art by this Sardinian artist who lived most of his years in the United States (fled from fascism). The buildings themselves are also beautiful.

The town is very welcoming and full of resources to visit, the church organ at the town hall, many ancient churches full of traditions, the streets of the historic center clean and tidy, ancient medieval remains, the prisons, the cemetery tower, the Nivola museum, we missed the visit to the small church of Santa Maria di Gonare due to lack of time and means of transport, we missed the visit to the surrounding nuraghi, and excellent traditional food. It will be nice to go back.
