The person assigned as tour guide was unable to work the day we went, so all tours were cancelled. However, we were allowed to walk the grounds. The green house sure brought back memories. It looks just like the one I played in as a child. I also loved the self-efficient way of living, from growing food to entertaining outside.... More

As another reviewer stated, Fern Cottage ha a sign out front that indicates it is now open "Thursdays-Saturdays 11-3 PM" Guide tours at 11 AM, 12PM and 2PM." Except that wen we arrived at 2:15 on a Friday, it was locked up tight. All we could do was walk the grounds- which were absolutely beautiful and peek in windows. I... More

What a treat! I called and found out they now have regular tours... I think three times a day? Amy kindly directed me away from a time when a large group was touring, to a hour later, when I actually got a private tour! If you are interested in California history or just want a charming visit to a beautiful... More

I can't say enough about our beautiful guide Emilee. She showed us the best tour we've seen in a long time. Very knowledgeable about the family and the history of the area with a lot of the " behind the scenes " unlocked for us. Don't forget to say hi to her pug and cat too. Your friends, Dave and... The tour was unique in that all the furnishings, clothing, photos, and personal affects of the Ross family were all present and well displayed which gave you a very real (and accurate) view of what living in those times. The tour guide or docent wa wonderful as she actually resides in the residence which qualifies her as quite an authority. This is well... More

Great lesson in California history from our tour guide. Charming house with LOTS of things to explore. The Russ family truly helped to shape our early pioneer history with a great insight for progress. We own the family a great deal of respect. Just make a reservation that matches your time schedule - the estate is a must see while... More

I was looking for something to do with my 7 year old Granddaughter while visiting Eureka and found Fern cottage! It was a fascinating look into the Russ family history, most everything is as it was in 1866. Being met by our guide in early 1900 attire set the stage for our walk back in time. This tour is not to... More

The personal history of the Russ family is very interesting. Our guide dressed in early 1900 attire, gave us a fascinating look into an early founding family's history, with a grand tour of the cottage which grew and grew with the family. Call the Cottage for reservations.

The town of Ferndale is just west of Eureka and well worth the 30 minute diversion. The homes and town has been featured in several movies, most notably "The Majestic" with Jim Carrey several years ago. Just park downtown and walk around the blocks and delight in the intersting and whimsical architecture and gardens. The cafes and bakeries in town... More
