I had known about this Museum, but had no idea just how extensive their holdings were. It is a small museum, with convenient free parking at the entrance, and a bargain price, free for younger children. Well worth a visit, Their historic exhibits are amazing, seemingly priceless, offering not only Native American history, but exhibits of native cultures from around the world, some dating back thousands of years, as well as western art and animals. My great-grand children loved the Museum. Highly recommended. Will return.

It's a great local museum. They have many interesting artifacts and the docents are eager to show you around and tell you interesting facts about each item.

If you like natural history, archeaology, anthropology, art then this gem of museum is a must see. The primary focus of the museum is on the development of the Americas, from the earliest fossils to thru contemporary art and jewelry. There's a fascinating amount of fossils, gem stones, Native American artifacts and historical photos on display. The docents are informative, enthusiastic and really make history come alive.

This museum consists of the collection of one man who not only donated his collection to the college but who also built the building that houses it. While it is not 100% "American" ( the museum has a number of Asian artifacts) it is a wonderful collection. If you are in Eastern San Diego County and have an hour or so, do go. (Free Parking, even though it is on a campus where parking is probably not free!)

We did not know about this Museum until we read the San Diego Family magazine, and found a list of places to visit.
We were pleasantly surprised by the wide range of exhibits that are well displayed to show the craftsmanship of people hundreds of years ago, and the fossils of creatures thousands of years ago.
Although the museum is self guided over one floor of 4 wings, the volunteer staff were very informative and helpful.
The cost of entry is very reasonable, as are the items to purchase, such as stones and crafts, so it is your choice if you wish to put a $ donation in the collection box.
We recommend this museum unreservedly! Allow 2hours to appreciate it all. But note, we did not see a machine to buy a drink from!

For years I took my students on field trip to the Heritage of the Americas museum to learn about Native Americans. We often had as a speaker the man who donated much of what is in the collection. There are 4 wings to the museum and each has its own theme. The artifacts are interesting , stunning, informative and give real insight to the culture of the Native Americans. It's small enough to see in a couple of hours, but I loved going back yearly to see the changes in the collections and absorb more information. There are oil paintings, taxidermy animals, ancient pottery, wampum, deerskin dresses, old guns and much more! Take a trip to visit this amazing museum on the Cuyamac College campus in Rancho San Diego! You can even take a picnic and eat on the patio if you wish!

My now 96 year old mother-in-law loves this museum, and wanted to take our young boys there several years ago. We all loved our visit. There is something of interest to everyone; the docents and other volunteers are lovely and helpful; and the gift shop was a treasure trove, especially for my youngest son. He is ready to go back - and this is a child who has been to museums of all sizes across the US and Canada.

Wow!... I was blown away. Museums can be pricey and boring, but this museum was very reasonable ($2 for seniors... kids free), and I never expected to see Lindbergh's war bonnet given to him by Native Americans, or a wonderful jade collection including a jade suit.

This place is what a museum should be... interesting objects with stories and a staff that are more than helpful. I plan to come back with all my grand kids and I am sure they will love the place.

The stated mission of the museum is to bring excitement, joy, and learning to children (and adults), and they definitely hit the mark.

And their gift shop has reasonable priced items so any child could afford to take something home... I think that is way cool too.
