We stayed at Pension Vienna in Methana. The building's location was very close to beaches, restaurants and the Port for the ferry boat (to Poros and Piraeus). This place was impeccably clean! Our rental had a kitchen, 3 piece bathroom and 2 bedrooms (with TVs), a wrap-around balcony, and views of the Saronic Gulf. The owner, Maria, was a warm and caring hostess. We felt very welcome and she was helpful with anything we needed during your stay.

After a 20 min hike walking in the forest you reach the volcano hill from where was created most of the Methana peninsula. Take care of the path. In some part because of no sign you can take the difficult and more dangerous way!

This is not a walk to attempt if you have mobility issues. We turned back after 5minutes. The ‘path’ was a scramble over rocks some of which were loose.

After a short hike, you'll arrive at the volcano. The volcano itself is not so spectacular, but the view from up there is breathtaking. You can see the lava fields and the ocean...

I've been visiting Methana since I was a child and every time I discover something new. Methana is a peninsula in the Northen-east part of Peloponnisos but administratively belongs to Attika region. It is easily accessible by car (180 km from Athens, around 1 1/2 to 2 hours) and by ferry boat, though I personally prefer the car because it gives you freedom in your program (ferry boat's timetable is very limited). Methana has a unique combination of mountain and sea. You can hike, do mountain bike, enjoy the sea, visit the volcano (a bit tricky to find it, but if you get lost, ask around, they will be more than willing to help you), enjoy a cup of coffee or a nice meal next to the sea (literally). It is a place ideal for couples or families. For years Methana has been my little secret.

Good option for one day trip from Athens! The trail is about 20-30 minutes on foot and easy to walk. You can see everywhere the volcanic rocks. Also driving to the volcano there is a beautiful village before Kammeni Chora wich is built upon the volcanic ashes.

We walked the rout to the volcano which was excellent with the most stunning views. You need good shoes as at times you have to clamber over rocks ect. But it is a really enjoyable walk and takes about half an hour from the car park each way given g time for photo opportunities ect. The drive up and down are also beautiful and the village down below is so nice with a beautiful little restaurant for refreshments. There is no charge to do the walk and it is a lovely way to see views of lots of the island. Then at the end dinner in the port at jimmys a perfect end.

The spot is 4km away from Vathi. If you ask Pavlo (from the "to babu" restaurant) will bring you there with his car and pick you up for 25 eur. It take 20 min to go up. The track is well marked, you need no map. At the top there is an opening looking line a cave and you can walk down inside. It is just 20 - 30 m long. In total you can make the trip in less than 1.5h. Nice to do as a break to the sailing day!
