DelMar is my favorite racetrack in America! I schedule a vacation to visit family around the summer racing season annually and try to include either Opening Day or the Pacific Classic Day. The facility is spectacularly beautiful. The staff is friendly and helpful. We’ve owned boxes and I’ve sat in last-minute seats—there doesn’t seem to be a bad place to attend. My very favorite thing to do daily is start my day by going to early morning workouts. DelMar at daybreak, watching the beauty of the horses working is magical.

First impressions
Exciting

Parking
Plenty, up close (valet 30, preferred 20, regular 10) to far away but there is a trolley. Rideshare is also available.

Ambiance
It’s a racetrack so exciting.
Beautiful

Menu
A couple of options to get.

Food
Stadium food good

Price
Good for stadium fare

Final Thoughts
Make it a day, visit Del Mar beach and restaurants prior to racetrack.
Walk around and explore all the venue.
You can Basically sit anywhere but there are some choice seats to reserve.
You can be right up to the track but cannot see the whole race.
Level 4 you can see the whole track.
Covered seating was great.

A must visit.
Bet as you wish, you have about 30 minutes between races but it goes fast.

This was my first experience at a horse racing track on the fall opening day (Veteran's Day). Classic old stadium that is operated by the State of California. Valet parking is worth it. Friendly and informative agents for placing your bets. Didn't win, but minimum bets for a horse to win is only $2. Beautiful thoroughbred horses in eight races over the afternoon. Fun place to spend a few hours.

The Del Mar racetrack is a venue that every horse racing fan should make sure to experience. The location, a few hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean, is incredible and the track itself is a landmark. The 2022 meet featured high quality racing with nationally known trainers and jockeys and quite a few graded stakes races anchoring a strong program. We spent five consecutive days at the track concluding with the Labor Day program. The track facility could improve by having better quality control over the betting window tellers; we experienced attitudes and hostility that were simply inexplicable. We asked one teller why he treated the customers so poorly and his response was that "you are confusing me." Isn't part of the job to help patrons who may not be veteran horseplayers to navigate the sometimes obscure terminology and "lingo" used in the pari mutuel industry? We were unfailingly polite but the same could not be said of at least two betting window tellers of the six or seven we patronized during our time on site. The end result was that we simply used betting apps (twinspires, 1/st bet, etc.) to make our wagers rather than going to the windows. The cost of food and beverage is quite high; $14 for a solo cup of beer is more than a baseball, football or hockey game charges. Further, staff don't appear to be adequately briefed on some basic information - when we first arrived and asked about wifi, we were told first that the password was available from the information desk, then that there was no free wifi for track patrons, and finally that the "dmtc.bets" network was free and did not require a password (correct). Del Mar is a great track but could be an even better sports and entertainment venue if it invested a bit in improving the rough edges of the facility and upgrading its staff.

Drove down from LA to visit some family members in OC, so we though a day at the races would be fun.

We elected to go on Friday as the races started later, which made it much more pleasant with the cooler weather. Surprised it wasn't very crowded. Valet parked, which was well worth it, although it was a long wait to retrieve our car.

Not many food choices, and certainly nothing healthy. Overall a fun day.

Del Mar Race track is a GREAT facility, but unfortunately the major Jockey's and trainers have abandoned this thoroughbred race track. There is no rhyme or reason in trying to handicap the entries at Del Mar. The top notch trainers and Jockeys are all on the east coast. All you need to do is check out the the payoffs of the Pick 4, 5, and 6's this season a Del Mar to understand what I am talking about.
Stay away from this goat thoroughbred race track until the BIG Boys decide to come back here. Your wallet will appreciate it! Bing Crosby has to be rolling around in his grave! 😨

This was a fun way to spend a couple of days. The track is just across the street from the beach and we stayed at the Hilton that is within walking distance making coming and going from the track less of a hassle. It also enables you to go back to the room for a little rest or food as the race day will be 8-10 races long and everything in the track is expensive.

Certainly one of the most picturesque race tracks in the world DEL MAR just north of San Diego is a gem that Bing Cosby and Jimmy Durante founded and to this day remains a vibrant meteor of the highest level of horse racing. The track operates two sets of dates annually....summer and fall which it alternates with Santa Anita track in Los Angeles.
Del Mar is a beach town about 20 minutes north of San Diego. Easy Access off I5.
There is plenty of parking ($10). We reserved a table for lunch in the Club House Terrace Restaurant which does require a reservation for a fee which also includes Clubhouse Admission. The view from the outside terrace just past the finish line is excellent. When we were there early in the August meet service was a bit spotty, but ultimately, with a full house, the food and drink made its way to all the tables.
The fare at this restaurant is basically sandwiches and salads. Pricy to say the least and hardly gourmet fare. But at a race track, food is generally not the main attaction.
The horses, jockeys, trainers and atmosphere is.....
And there Del Mar, much like its peers at Saratoga, Monmuth, Santa Anita, Churchill, Keenland etc. presents lots of top line horses with the best jockey colony west of the Mississippi (and in some cases the country).
There are plenty of tellers, and plenty of bars, and lots of room to roam inside the concourse. A small but eclectic gift shop is on the first floor of the Clubhouse.

The facility has been updated recently and can easily accommodate huge crowds especially for the big stakes races usually on Saturdays. The Friday races begin at 3pm and often include live music.

In southern So Cal Del Mar is a great visit once, twice or every day during the meet. It will not disappoint.
Plunge your guts out, or simply watch the horses in the paddock and kibbitz with the jockeys and trainers. Laid back. Efficient. Classy. That's Del Mar Race Track
