Lake Almanor is a hidden gem. Beautiful place to go hiking, camping, fishing, skiing, etc. Small towns with locally owned businesses from affordable to over priced depending on where you go. Very seasonal but even winter time is a great time to visit! Be sure to explore the area; there is more to Lake Almanor than just the West Shore... More

We first heard about Lake Almanor about 9 years ago. It is about 5-6 hours north of our home in San Jose, but we decided to make the trip , and are so glad we did! We heard about Camp Wilson in Prattville ( near Chester) so we visited there. My husband enjoys kayak fishing and had mostly done ocean... More

We laid eye on Lake Almanor for the first time in 2016. We were shocked at the beauty, Lake Tahoe without the tourists! Serenity, majestic mountains, fire red sunsets, hiking, forest walks, boating, biking, on and on ..so breathtaking, my husband and I bought a home same year. A wonderful small mountain town without one traffic light!

Wonderful mountain lake like Tahoe was 70 years ago with development that hasn't gone over the top. Accommodations are available but not plentiful. The scenery is great especially in winter. Water sports are popular in summer and cross country skiing popular in winter. Super scenic drive to go around the lake through Chester, the largest town on the drive. The... More

Camped at Northshore Campground east of Chester two miles. Rustic campground with great views of the lake. Old utilities and hard to level in several sites. But we enjoyed it once we found sites we could level on. Had fires and watched the lake and birds. Chester cute little town with great gift shop.

Almanor is beautiful. It's not overrun with tourists, unless you go to the Big Cove area. That area is way too congested and is wall to wall people in the summer. Best avoiding it. Whether hiking down the rocks to Hamilton Branch, swimming off the shores of the West Shore, or fishing, boating, sailing, Almanor offers it. Warm summer days and mild... More

After my negative review of the swimming beach on the west shore of Lake Almanor last year (when I gave the lake a poor review for drought-induced impacts including fish parasites and an algal bloom in the water), I returned to see how more water in the lake has impacted the beach. The good news is the algal bloom is... More

I really did not want to share this lake with anyone as its too great a get away for anyone who wants to be in the mountains with scenic views of an active volcano (Mt. Lassen) with some of the best fishing, boating, hiking and outdoor activities in No. CA. With miles of beautiful shoreline that includes meadows, natural springs,... More

This lake is huge. We stopped for a picnic at a designated picnic stop. The restroom were clean and the picnic area was clean as well.
