For a small-ish community, Carlsbad Parks and Recreation gave a great gift to the city when they installed this park, community center, gymnasium complex in the middle of a neighborhood. It was getting good use while we were there, even by the homeless folks who camped outside the gym and utilized the picnic tables. We understand that a homeless center is in the future plans for Carlsbad.

The park had basketball courts, a baseball diamond, soccer field, and some additional community oriented amenities on this 7.7 acre parcel. We happened upon it quite by accident while we were out exploring the side streets in the Village center.

Public art, public service (senior meals), activity fields, community gardens, benches and fountains, and wide open spaces. What is not to like? Homelessness is part of our urban reality and, anywhere the climate is moderate, it is going to be attractive to the less fortunate. Carlsbad does have a Homeless Task Force (city black vehicles identified as such which are intended to assist and counsel the dispossessed).

Back to the park: during our week-long stay here in Carlsbad we were glad to be able to walk the expansive grounds, admire the flower sculpture monuments, read the plaques describing Carlsbad's growth into flower prominence (and its history), enjoy a senior league softball game, chat with a volunteer readying meals for seniors, and left (revitalized) to continue our neighborhood walk.

Carlsbad has a true community gem of a diamond here and it is picking up more polish each time we come to visit. This is a tranquil green oasis in the middle of a neighborhood of established older cottages and multi-unit complexes.

Truly a frightening place to go and I would NEVER go at night. It's such a beautiful and newer park but it's just not safe. Our city needs to do something ASAP
