While aimlessly wandering around the Buttes, we happened upon an abandoned wildlife refuge. It has really suffered the ravages of drought, but though the toads were comatose in dry mud, we did see some great pic ops. We didn't meet or see a human while...More

Gray Lodge, like some of the flooded rice fields along Roads 7 and Z a bit NW, offers huge flocks of Snow and Greater white-fronted geese, countless Wood ducks and American coots, along with Pintail ducks, curlews, Black-necked stilts, Black-tailed Deer and apparently even an...More

We have returned to Gray Lodge repeatedly over the years to observe the bird migration along the Pacific Flyway. There is a particular beauty here -- what can equal the sights and sounds of thousands of birds and waterfowl?

This place is cracking with birds during the later parts of fall. There usually always some kind of bird life so see year round, herons, quail, wild turkey, ducks, coots, geese, pheasants and occasional raptors. There are a couple of good fishing ponds too.

Great place to hike and photograph, especially if you like birds. It is on the migratory path of the Canadian Snow Goose from November through January. All different kinds of birds at different times of the year.

For "birders" and especially those in to waterfowl a visit to Gray Lodge in December or January is a must. Have lived near it for 70 years and never tire of visiting it. Pretty special place. About an hour from Sacramento. Just north of the...More

This is one of 5 refuges that are part of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and it is so good that I did the self drive auto tour twice, once at dawn and then again the next day at dusk. It is close to...More

In fact, the ranger we met told us to make sure we paid attention to what turns we made, because there are over 100 miles of trails crisscrossing the refuge! No worries about getting lost as long as you remember where one of the main...More

Great birding here: I discovered it in early 2015 with my niece. My husband and I went back this February. Miles and miles of "auto trails" and miles to walk if so inclined. Range of habitats. Wasn't busy the mid-week day we went in mid-February...More

We love to visit Gray Lodge in the winter and see all the water fowl and other birds at the refuge. The sight and sounds of hundreds of geese taking flight is amazing. You have to remember that this is a home for the animals...More
