Built by King Stephen " the Great and Holy" during his reign - it is one of the most known Monasteries of Romania. It is almost 500 years old but still standing tall, inside the church of the monastery you shall find the grave of King Stephen.
The church has beautiful paintings inside - on the outside is white with no decorations.
In one of the buildings in the courtyard you will a museum dedicated to King Stephen and Moldavia - very interesting to visit - entrance fee is about 2 euros /person.
When we were visiting it was not crowded at all - so we could visit the place in relative "peace" - parking outside the monastery is free of charge.
Overall a great experience and a historical place that shall be on your list when you visit Bucovina. (Why such a short review? well it is intended as a teaser determining you to go and visit and see for yourself).

We arrived in Putna after driving from Gura Homorului and seeing two other monasteries that day, so we were ready for the marvelous late lunch waiting for us in the monastery dining room. Wonderful fresh meats and natural veggies awaited us--and all from the monastery's own farms. But this visit was very special because we had a tour of the museum and the church where Stephen the Great is buried. Knowledgeable monks gave us an enormous amount of information to digest and also were kind enough to chat with us about monastery life. A late supper followed and breakfast the next morning rounded out a lovely stay overnight. Go to Putna for the contemplative atmosphere and enjoy the food and marvelous people dedicated to service there.

Putna monastery, built in the 16-th century by Stefan the Great, who is also buried here, is certainly the most beautiful monastery in Moldova and Bucovina. Beside the old church, which was reworked and rebuilt, there is also a very interesting museum, where you can see a copy of the sword of the great king. It is a "must to visit" point for everyone interested in the culture or history.

This monastery is deeply impressive first of all because of its quiet, 'not showy' nature and architecture. You get the feeling that something very old and of certain depthness is involved there. It's utmost Romanian in character, both architecturally and spiritually, and one can really feel the calmness and profound feeling of historical meditation surrounding him/her.
Just look around and you get the reason why Stefan cel Mare si Sfant chosen to be buried there - of all the monasteries he built.

The Putna monastery was built by Stephen the Great, between 1457 and 1504. He ruled for 47 years and is known for the campaings against the Ottoman empire. The Putna monastery was the first in a series of ecclesiastical monuments built by this great ruler and was destined to become his burial place. For romanian people, it's a fortress of pray and spirituality.

Putna Monastery is the most spectacular in Bucovina due to its far north location, grand entrance, atmosphere, and size. It has the most beautiful altar I've seen. It's all mysterious and grand.

Built by Stephen the Great - even if is hard to find an outstanding monastery in the area that was not built by this ruler, later proclameid saint due to his life as a winning warrier but also to his still faith in God and in his power. So Stephen the Great - who ruled in Moldavia between 1457-1504 and had been involved in more than 40 wars, most of them with otoman empire soldiers and most of them won by moldavians, threw an arrow in order to establish the place of what is today Putna Monastery. Inside the church there is a miracolous icon - with Saint Mary and also there are the graves of the first two wifes and some children of the rulers (at the left side of the entrance), where as on the right side is the grave of Stephen himself. Even if on Stephen’s buried place there is engraved his born year, the death year is left unwritten as he would live forever through hid deeds and spirit. A copy of his sword is presented in the museum, while the original sword can be seen in Top Kapi in Istambul. Also, in the Museum a lot of original embroidery and reigning clothes can be admired. At the time I visited the monastery, the monks were preparing to submit this valuable collection for a temporary exhibition in Louvre (starting in April 2019 and on for a couple of months). Moreover, a lot of paintings and authentic objects from that period can also be seen in the monastery and museum. I have been told while being there that during summer symposions and conferences are being held with the participation of important cultural personalities from Romania and from all over the world. These kind of events were initiated years before by a great woman that used to be a proffesor and eventually she became a non (Zoe Dumitrescu Busulenga).

Such a beautiful place and wonderful history, make sure to visit the museum inside the monastery and read a little about this place before arrival, there's so much to learn about it. And bring your camera (pay the 10 lei tax though!) and walk inside the beautiful church.
