The Centro de Artes de San Agustin is in a large, converted textile factory in the countryside. It looks as though it was probably built a little after the turn of the last century. It was located where it is because of the ready supply of spring water. The conversion to Art Center is one of the most successful such projects I've ever seen. Regardless of what is being shown in the enormous space, the Centro is a wonderful place to visit, even if it's just to walk around. When we went, the show was a retrospective of the work of the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. Any traveler to Oaxaca who has the slightest interest in photography should go to this extraordinary show. I had never seen her work before. I found almost every photograph riveting, and the show a huge survey of her work. What an eye! What a feel for her fellow humans! Take my word for it and go to this show. It's an easy cab ride (about half an hour) from downtown Oaxaca. You will be very glad you went. Go!

The renovated textile factory converted into an art school is hypnotic work of art and skill with loving integration of old and new structural and landscape features in the tranquil backdrop of stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains. The exhibit of Ikat textiles and fanciful fashion design blew our minds.

I spent 3 weeks at CaSa last summer as part of an artist residency. When I arrived , I could not believe my eyes. Such an incredible place in the middle of nowhere. I live in Belgium and we certainly have no place like this, not even close. Francisco Toledo is a famous local artist who has been using his fame and money towards the conservation of indigenous culture and heritage. He is so prolific both in his work and this "mission" that he has initiated the Photographic center Manuel Alvarez Bravo, iago (art library) , the ethnobotanical gardens (all in Oaxaca) and CaSa, to name just his biggest projects.
But you don't have to be an artist to visit CaSa. The place itself is well worth the 30' collectivo ride (13,5 pesos) from the center. It has been beautifully renovated, with a view of the surrounding mountains. The garden is really pretty (loved all the cactus!) too. There are regularly exhibitions. Last summer was a window paper show that was really nice. You are also likely to see people at work. Every week there are several workshops open to the public (and FREE - but you have to register in advance) : dance, printmaking, photography, stop motion for kids, yoga, singing.... I also want to mention an incredible 3 year program they have developped for 6 kids of local indigenous villages who have been studying the violin (traditional music). They sometimes perform there, so check out CaSa facebook page before going... they are incredible.

A verdant valley with water coursing down the hills and ditches is a rarity in Oaxaca.... it is well worth seeing and enjoying this village for that alone. Unfortunately the Centro de Artes was closed when we went and finding the paper workshop was difficult. It was quite empty when we did find it; we made arrangements to take a tour but it turned out to be ANOTHER entrepreneur who took us to a totally different place which was OK. We did go through the process but did not participate.

The famous Mexican artist Francesco Toledo has done a lot to conserve and develop the small community of San Agustin Etla. This Art Center in a skillfully renovated old factory is a vvid example of his influence. We spent some weeks here and visited several times, as we had to install art-work for the international textile exhibition "Contemporary Art of Shibori and Ikat", but it is also nice to stroll on the premises and take the path down to the paper factory. Comparing world-wide, I can give only 4*, locally it certainly merits 5*.

Before heading out to the CASA or paper factory it would be prudent to ensure that there is something on display, which is by no means assured. The restored building is indeed interesting and a small design workshop in an associated building, also interesting and staffed by congenial craftspeople who were pleased to talk about their work (in Spanish). But these may not warrant the trip. The paper factory was not operating at all, which we were informed by local CASA staff, is also a common state of affairs.

From the city of Oaxaca we hired a taxi (Freddy at 52 951 307 5981) for a day of sightseeing (250 pesos per hour, about 13 US dollars) in Etla. After going to the mercado in Etla proper, we were driven up into the foothills through a windy road of lush, mediterrean type landscape, clean and well paved streets, and many private gated developments, obviously a prosperous area. As we got into San Augustin, near the top of the foothills, the houses were closer together and the road windier. This little pueblo reminded me of a small, spotless town in the Italian hills. At the tip of the foothill was Centro de Artes, what a jewel! The setting is magnificent, the views sweeping, mediterrean gardens, and grand architecture. This is a school of art with public installations of student and faculty art that is unique, some of the visiting faculty are well-kown and internationally famous. Go early, we got there at 10:30 AM and spent two hours wandering through exhibits and enjoying the vistas. There is no fee or ticket holder, no registration of names but a couple of security guards that were very helpful. There were two installations of art, the paper jewlery and kites in the Pergola and the paper-cut art display in the main building. There are clean and modern bathrooms there and a tiny giftshop. There are some chic and trendy restaurants in S.A. and lots of little stores to buy drinks and snacks. I hope you go and enjoy!

The architect who designed this art center complex did wonders renovating this old factory building. Along with my Spanish teacher I took a collectivo (group taxi) for 12 pesos You should check and see if there are any special exhibits or performances before departing Oaxaca. I saw a very unusual and interesting modern take on King Lear.The audience had to follow the actors around the outside of the various buildings to watch the performace. There is also a small gift shop with some excellent high end necklaces and earrings.As with many sites in Mexico there is a lack of signage so you might have to ask how to get there and what there isto see once you are there.

Refubished textile factory now houses an art school, with workshops offered as well as exhibits. It is an oasis of peaceful respite from the traffic of Oaxaca. We took a taxi and he waited an hour while we visited the site. Also nearby is a paper making workshop, well worth a visit.

Before even entering the building to seen an art exhibit, you will be amazed by the architecture and details. The amount of picture I took of buildings and details posted below speaks to all there is to see in this one small location. It is definitely worth the trip from downtown Oaxaca to CASA in San Agustin Etla. I took a taxi, which can be pricey...ask around about the colectivos.

What is the fest way to get there from Oaxaca Centro?

Just got back from there today. You can take a collectivo taxi, which means they squish 5 people in one taxi, and it costs $16 pesos pp each way. They stop to pick up others on the way. Or we took the taxi just for us 3 home to Oaxaca and got him to drop us at the Zocalo for 200 pesos ($10). The taxis are all around. Ask for the closest place to get one. It's really beautiful and a whole different scene from Oaxaca. Definitely worth it.

I don't remember the hours - I think you can find it on the internet. We did not go anywhere for lunch, but there are places in the area (not in walking distance). We found a cab driver who spoke some English and knew the area. He took us there and left us for an hour, then picked us up. There was an exhibition (this is a changing thing, check their website) Also, we went through the buildings and one of the staff offered to show us around and explained the history. Our driver then took us to a nearby area of paper making. Well worth the trip, and no one hassles you to buy anything.
