About
Access to the Abbey Church is through the east processional door. One of the four border abbeys, Jedburgh Abbey was founded by David I in around 1138 for Augustinian canons. Explore the fascinating Jedburgh Abbey along with its visitor centre and surrounding herb garden with aromatic plants and a stone display at the west end. The church was built in the Romanesque and early Gothic styles and is remarkably complete. Jedburgh Abbey’s close location to the English border meant it was frequently targeted by invading border armies. Remains of the cloister buildings have been uncovered and finds from the excavations, including the 12th century 'Jedburgh comb' and an eighth century shrine are on display.

Visited on what had been a wet day but once we arrived within the Abbey walls the sun shone on us as if by magic!

In the centre of Jedburgh with free parking very close by the Abbey is only offering admission by way of pre-booked tickets due to COVID but the very pleasant gentleman at the ticket office issued us with tickets as there was no one else visiting.

An amazing ruin which has been lovingly cared for and has good signage throughout. There are also points where you can listen to a commentary about the Abbey by way of your mobile phone which is informative both in a practical and historic sense.

There are also some interested gravestones in the adjoining graveyard which should also be explored.

An interesting and informative visit.

Excellent example of a medieval Abbey. The main body of the building is impressive and must have been a hell of a sight in its heyday. The place is very clean with Covid19 distancing well marked and with great staff on hand to help you out should you need it. We were lucky on the weather front and this helped a lot (but I would say that even on a rainy day this place would look good) We sat on the benches provided (quite a few)in the gardens, took in the atmosphere and tried to imagine what it would have been like living here all those years ago.
If you are ever in the area I would strongly recommend that you spend some time in this magical place

It’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination to realise that this 12th century Augustinian abbey , with it’s combined Romanesque & early Gothic architecture, must have been truly spectacular back in it’s prime. It’s amazing that so much of it is still impressively intact nearly 1,000 years later. It was constructed by order of King David 1 of Scotland as a priory for Augustinian monks - but also as a stunning showpiece to demonstrate to the English that Scottish design was on par with theirs. Unfortunately, due to it’s near proximity to the border, it was attacked several times by the English armies, and had to be reconstructed in part & continuously repaired. It’s had a very chequered history over centuries, and is now managed by Historic Scotland. Unfortunately, due to ongoing masonry inspection, there is only limited access to the exterior of the abbey, and the interior’s presently off limits - but that’s reflected in the admittance ticket price of only £3.50 per adult - plus the information and displays within the ticket office/shop were interesting, and the manicured garden with it’s carefully tended plants and herbs etc was a pleasant place to take in the peaceful atmosphere.

It’s a shame that the interior of the abbey is currently off limits because of unsafe masonry. However, the grounds and exterior are worth a look. It’s a seriously impressive building, close to the centre of the modern town with parking directly opposite.
The staff on site are incredibly friendly and doing their very best to keep everyone safe, and able to enjoy their visit to the Abbey. Under the current conditions ( partly closed) I wouldn’t recommend making a special journey but it’s well worth stopping off for a look if you are in the area.

We discovered this place whilst driving through and recommended by the Scottish tourist board. Entry is pre booked but we were allowed entry by two very nice members of staff.
The area is so peaceful and makes you wonder what it was like as a whole building before us English came!
Free parking near the bus station and a nice little shop at the venue as well as toilets

Lovely helpful staff. Very friendly.
Abbey was interesting(the craftsmanship off all those years ago is amazing)but not really worth paying to get in as you can only see a very small part of it. Parts were closed off due to the building being un safe. No good for people with walking difficulties.

Thank you for taking the time to review Jedburgh Abbey. We are glad to hear that you found our team helpful and friendly- we think they’re great too! However, we’re very sorry to hear that your whole visit did not live up to your expectations. The grounds and shop are open, but unfortunately the rest of the abbey currently remains closed as a precautionary measure while we undertake site inspections, we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. Our admission price is reduced to reflect this closure. There are stairs and gravel paths throughout the abbey and when it is open as normal there is level access to the first floor, via an accessible ramp, and the exhibition area of the first floor gives a fantastic view of the whole site. Thank you for your feedback.

This is a beautiful abbey in Jedburgh, which is good for a 30-minute exploration, or so.
Unfortunately, entrance to the actually abbey is currently not possible due to some restoration/construction work, but the rest of the site, including the small garden, is accessible.
Entrance is apx. 4USD.

We arrived at the Abbey and were told that the actual inside of the Abbey was closed so they had lowered their prices to reflect that which seemed fair. The stonework high up is unsafe so they have stopped access for now. Still, found the small exhibition intresting and had a wandering around the grounds. You can still walk right up to the Abbey and have a good look. Spent about half an hour there.

What a lovely town is Jedburgh, and I think that the Abbey ruin is the jewel in its crown.

We spent a pleasant half hour or so looking at the small museum display and then up close to the ruins. It was disappointing that we were not able to go inside, as I think that that would have been even more atmospheric, but I understand that safety must come first.

A beautiful and photogenic abbey ruin with an interesting exhibition in the visitor centre. Staff are friendly and helpful. The interior is closed at the time of writing for safety inspections but there's plenty to see from the outside.
