About
The Salt Mountain is a unique natural phenomenon in the world and is still growing while being eroded by the rain. Its 120 meters are just the tip of an enormous diapir nearly two kilometres deep. Lasting an hour, you will go down to a depth of 86 meters and enjoy the spectacle of shapes and textured features of the salt massif. The Salt Mountain Cultural Park also offers the visitor the option to walk through the old mining facilities. Beneath the imposing feature of the winding tower of the old mine shaft Maria Teresa lies the museum area: an open-air area that explains the history of the explotation of salt, the geology, the minerology and botany of this Area of Natural Interest, the Salt Valley of Cardona. The visitor can also see the shaft's mining machinery, which is a very good example of industry archaeology dessigned by Alsthom (currently Alstom) during the 1920s. A photographic exhibition can be seen in the basement. The old carpenter's workshop and the room where all the machinery used to be repaired house the Salt Handicraft Centre, Art-Sal and the exhibition Memory of the women from the mining neighborhood. We can also find there "La Cafeteria" with outdoor seating. At the reception, you can find "La Botigueta", a little shop with a wide selection of products and bibliography about Cardona.

Very interesting tour with some amazing formations. Nuria was a brilliant guide, very knowledgeable and answered all sorts of questions.
It would have been good to go deeper but obviously not possible due to safety.
My attached photos speak for themselves, find time to visit, you will not regret it.

We are a family of 4 with a 6 year old and a 9 year old.
All 4 of us had an amazing time, the tour guide was great especially with the kids.
I would recommend it to anyone. Unless you are slightly afraid of small spaces.

Upon arriving in Cardona we knew of the salt mines, we visited the info centre at the bottom of the walkway from the Castle and were given info and a map to make our way the approx. 1km walk. It was an easy walk from town, we purchased tickets for the tour for €12, although the tours only seem to be conducted in Spainish or Catalan we were provided with an informative brochure on what would be covered in English. Once we travelled down the track by mini van we were provided with helmets and entered the mines with the guide. The tour was fantastic and along with the brochure we learnt a lot about the formation and mining of the salt, our guide was also brilliant. Would highly recommend a visit.

Unfortunately we could not get an English tour but we went along anyway. We were provided with a brochure that provided excellent information. The tour is 50 minutes. You can get a discount if you are staying local so mention it when purchasing the tickets. You are provided with hair net and then helmet. Wear good shoes. You take a bus to the bottom and then walk the tunnels and see some good caverns with great stalactites and stalagmites. Photography is limited. The tour guide was very nice and seemed to be passionate and informative. It is a big of a walk. 10 mins for town, 25 from the paradore.

About an hour from Barcelona and very close to the center of Cardona. These caves are simply awesome! Be careful you know where to pick up your tickets as we were informed by email to go to the tourist center in the centre of town, which was closed, but actually we should have just gone straight to the mine visitor center.

This place surpassed our expectations, the colours of the salt crystals were beautiful, from darker sedimentation, to light pink and white crystals. Tours were in Catalan and Spanish but there's audio guide for other languages. Inside the mountain was a nice temperature of 17degrees; very interesting history if the mines and the castle.

We booked this tour 3 months in advance. Glad we did as it appeared to be full when we arrived. The tour was offered in the languages of Catalan and Spanish. There was an audio guide for English and French.
The guide was very nice and could speak English. The salt mine itself was amazing. My kids loved it, the grandparents loved it, and we loved it. The history was very interesting. Would highly recommended this attraction!

We visited Cardona to see the salt mines, it is very interesting and fascinating to see the different rock/salt formations.
One important note is that the tours are only in Catalan or Spanish and if you need to follow in English or French you need to get an audio guide. I assume these are available from the reception at the start, we were running late and a bit flustered when we arrived and so didn't think about the guide until we had already rushed to the back to get our bus. As a result we arrived at the caves without an Audio guide - to be fair this was good for my Spanish practice and my wife and I could follow along but our daughter was bored from the begining which made it tough.
That said I think she still enjoyed the day as well, oit would have just been more interesting if she could have understood what was going on (Unfortunately my Castellano is not good enough to listen and translate)
A second important point is to wear a light raincoat, the roof drips constantly so if you don't want to get your clothes stained with Salt water make sure you are covered.
I would definitely recommend adding this stop on any trip to the area. Especially as it is so close to the castle and old town that Cardona makes a really great day trip.

Saludos,
Cardona Turisme
