Nice walk around the the area! Great view as well! Would recommend instead of the 1000 steps castle on top, but both are enjoyable!

Another castle in Nafplion - maybe not as extensive and tiring as Palamidi castle, but impressive nonetheless.
A great place to explore and a fun and interesting way to spend the afternoon.

Although our book said this was not a very interesting place to visit, we loved it. Drive the car up, and start walking around this huge castle complex which has commanding views of the surrounding area, the city and the sea.

A fun place to walk through the old halls and tunnels. It does not get nearly the visitors of the fortress above and was worth checking out while in the area.

However it is not so famous as the Palamidi it is worth to have a walk in this older fortress. There is also a hidden elevator for free to get up :)

This is the oldest of the three fortresses that protect Nafplion. The town originally was contained withing the lower walls, but it has spread across the valley to the sea.

Many reviewers here confuse this fortress with the imposing Palamidi, which stands atop the same name hill.
Akronafplia fortress is the smaller one, not seen from a distance, but rather when you enter the town and walk it. It is free to visit, no entry fee and much less requiring than Palamidi, but also not that attractive as the bigger one.

It’s the oldest part of the city of Nafplion. Way back in the 13th century, it was the main town, surrounded by barracks and populated in the thousands. In later years, the Venetians and the Franks conquered the town and strengthened its fortifications. After Greece got its independence (1830) it was used as a prison. In the 1960s a hotel complex was built, which still stands today.

This is the big fortress that you can see on the mountain up above town. It towers over the whole town and was built in a strategic place.

Good views, worth a walk up to explore, but not too much else to see.

Rather spoiled by the amount of graffiti and litter.
