The large stone building was originally a mosque, after the liberation it housed the Parliament of Greece, it functioned as a prison, it housed a School and today, having been restored, it hosts events and exhibitions of the Municipality. The trial of the leaders of the Greek Revolution, Theodoros Kolokotronis and Dimitrios Plaputos, took place in this area. Unfortunately, once again we found it closed. Also the place looked abandoned from the outside. Too bad the state hasn't given this historic and beautiful building the attention it deserves.

The Vouleftkko, Old State House, is an imposing mosque on Syntagma Square built in 1730 with late Ottoman architecture. The first Helleine Parliament had been housed here and currently administered by Ministry of Culture as a cultural center for local activities.

We found this by enquiring at the Tourist Office about a Municipal Art Gallery, details of which I discovered on the Nafplio website, and which looked interesting. It is apparently on the first floor of the building but has erratic opening hours. It seems a pity that they do not advertise it more.
However, the building was worth seeing from the outside. Like many, it has had a chequered history, built as a Turkish mosque in the late 18th century and then used to house the Parliament of the newly-independent Greece from 1825. Today it is used as a conference and cultural centre.

From its origins in 1730 as a Mosque, built so the story goes by a wealthy Ottoman Agha in reparation for his killing of two Venetians, it has had a varied life.
Its most revered role by Greeks is as home for the first Greek Parliament for a few months in the mid 1820s.
Subsequently it served as a school. For a time a prison existed on the entrance floor. After renovation it now serves as a cultural centre with the Municipal Gallery and also hosts conferences.

The first Parliament of Greece. Historic place. And very nice building. You can see it and then have your coffee on the small cozy cafes of the square.

This is quite an old historical building. It is easily accessible, best by foot, on your walk around Nafplio. It is in the centre of the town. It was originally a mosque, as it was built by the Turks during the time of the Ottoman occupation of the area. In the 1820s it was briefly used as the first Parliament House of the Greeks, and then turned into a school and a prison! Several famous Greek Revolutionaries were tried here in court. Now the building is used as a conference site and is also the site of the Municipal Library. A rather beautiful building, it is worthy a visit when you are in the area. We passed by it a couple of times during our stay in Nafplio.

This is the most important edifice on the beautiful central Syntagma square in Nafplio.
It was primary built as a Mosque during the Ottoman rule, while after gaining independence it served as a first Parliament, when Nafplio was the capital after the revolution.

Our choir Epilogi from Cyprus attended the 6th choral festival in Nafplio and it was held here the the Vouleftiko as it is called as it was the old state house and has very good acoustics.
