The museum is well worth a visit. There is no entry fee - surprising for such a quality exhibition. It is informative and easy to learn about the amazing history of kithera. It is not big but what is on exhibit is very interesting.

A very wide range archaeological finds on the island, which outline the history of Kythera from prehistoric to Roman times. Though small, the museum has a fantastic collection of ancient coins, showing the trade links that linked the island with various places in the ancient world. The museum is very modern, with a logical layout and labels in Greek and English, and it is free! It Is better than ever before, I hope new finds will be added to the collection over time.

Small but so well done, this is well worth seeing while on the island. Great chronological trip through the ages showing the various influences on Kythera.

The Archaelogical Museum of Kythira (AMK) is one of four new small Greek museums opened this year, and their presence is based on a modern and functional muselogical view. Although the site of AMK is small for many more discoveries that are not shown on the display cases, the way their emergence completely cover the island's history from early antiquity to the Byzantine period.
My personal assessment is the need of more of the classical period but also from the Shipwreck of Antikythera (mechanism, etc.) as well as the activities of the "Ieron Koryfis", which was excavated by John Sakellarakis in Agia Moni.
The end result however is that this is an exceptional presence that highlights the island and its history and shows how worthwhile to attempt extending it.

You learn many things about the history of the island and the population as well as how this island evolved influenced by Crete and after under the Venetians.

Very clear and well-curated museum at top end of Hora (not in castle). Gives a good picture of the island's history through artefacts and an excellent video.

Very small but full of goodness!
Great explanatory video that takes you through all the history of the island.
The collection has a little of everything (coins, jewellery, tools, etc).
The jewel of the crown if the Kythirean lion and the amazing video- mainly for children!
The extremely helpful museum curator gave my son a book about the lion.
Great visit!

The Island of Kythera is more than just the island of Aphrodite, it is an island of adventure with a rich history back to 6 B.C. This museum is modern as it was recently renovated after the 2006 earthquake. A must see for first timers, or even regulars to gain full appreciation for Kythera.

This is how a modern museum should be. The facts together with the artefacts, suitably supported by digital means. Watch the famous Lion of Cythira come to life in an animation for all ages. Kids will love it. There’s a small fee payable now, but not in any comparison to the value you get for it. A must see for every visitor who wants to have some knowledge about what he sees around the island.
