Dost Mohammad made Islamnagar his capital in 1709. In 1716 he built a fort here and this remained his stronghold till 1727 when he shifted his capital to Bhopal. The Rani Mahal was built as a palace with rectangular garden and deep arcades. This double storied palace has a beautiful baradari.

I love old structures and buildings and they take me right back to that time when there was glory in these buildings. I just imagined while entering here that how much difficult it would have been for once for the locals to enter and visit the place. Just a thought! It is a lush green and well maintained fort area.

Rani mahal is decent, but the cynosure of attention is Chaman mahal, where the first founder -king of Bhopal kingdom, Dost Mohd Khan, ruled from. What endeared the place to me were the decently curated gardens in the chowks at Rani mahal and the char bagh style lawns at Chaman Mahal. At the latter, the hamam is truly worth checking out. Ask the friendly staff, they'll guide u. The Sheesh mahal entrance offers an engaging array of pictures from the era with brief descriptions. An easy to approach location, though the way itself is nothing scenic. Walking shoes are a good idea though one can do with any comfortable footwear. There's a dedicated picnic-ing area - a great idea in a food loving nation and state, like ours. A small cafeteria and some shops outside are also available which stock usual road side fare. Needless to add,a camera is a must have. Give it 2 hours, commute extra.

Around 10 km. from Bhopal, Islamnagar, earlier known as Jagdishpur, is a small fortress, captured by nawab of Bhopal in early 18th century. It's a couple of km. off Berasia Road. Only some parts of the palaces and baradari are open for public. Though all the rooms are locked, yet the place is worth visiting to have a peep in the past. If you are with family, you can request for a look inside the hamam. The fort walls are impressive, but need immediate repairs. The entry fee is mere Rs. 10, absolutely nothing for the amount required for upkeep of the entire complex, yet the lawns for picnicking are quite well maintained.

Well if you are on a short trip to Bhopal, I would advise 'Skip this place'. Bhopal itself has a lot more to offer in terms of History - Gohar Mahal, Shaukat Mahal, Taj-ul-Masajid etc.

We could not find any buses plying to Islamnagar so had to hire an auto to take us there. From Habibganj, it took us nearly an hour to reach Islamnagar. Auto Driver was good and informed us about many places that fell on the way - 7772803086.
It had cost us 900 for an 8 hr long trip that included Islamnagar, Manav Sangrahlya, Tribal Museum and Birla Temple.

The Rani Mahal is a small Palace and not much to marvel there or even click. Only the main Verandah and the few rooms around it are allowed to visitors.

The Chaman Mahal,on the other hand, is architecturally beautiful and vast in area. We were allowed to climb up the stairs at Chaman Palace which added to the worth of visiting Islamnagar.
Since the place is not thronged by people as such, it's not very well-maintained but still not ruined either.
There's nothing in the name of the fort, just a massive entrance gate to Islamnagar, the village itself is established inside the fort.

There is a small cafeteria inside the Palace complex.
Free Drinking Water is available.
There are lawns around where you can sit and relax.
Both the Palaces are adjacent to each other - Rani Mahal staright from the gate and Chaman Mahal towards the right after you enter the premise. The Entry Ticket is 10rs. per person.
Photography is allowed.
The road from Bhopal to Islamnagar is suitable for two-wheelers as well. There is a lot of greenery on both the sides of the road.
We couldn't find any guide there.

All in all, I would suggest to visit Islamnagar if you are a History buff, a Student of Architecture/Archaeology or have spare time at hand to visit around Bhopal.

Though I have visited it many a times, I still can feel the same charm of the times when it was ruled by the Kings and queens of Bhopal. A great place to visit and one would enjoy the view and ambience of the palace if visited.

Excellent palace located in Islamnagar, North of the city of Bhopal. It is a very charming place with only few tourists coming there. Next to the Rani Mahal, the Chaman Mahal is situated. Both are very intersting and nicely maintained.

This palace was built back in 1700's and has been the pride of the city every since. However, as much as its a relaxing place to be, the buildings are in poor shape and really need some renovation work done on them.
