This hill is kind of desolate with a small temple on top. Access way to reach top is in shambles and reaching top is really challenging. But view from top are really great. Especially during sunset it gives surreal view of surrounding temples and other heritage structures.

Been staying near Hampi since 23 years but found our first opportunity to climb this hill without going through previous reviews.. well 23 years back must have been an easy climb but at present age it really needs strong knees to climb steps of different height / angle / direction .. As we started in dark , torch light with good beam is utmost necessary.. The terrain is really tough as we climb higher & higher. At some places we need to cross slopping rocks which is really scary as no proper guide/pathway-guess & proceed . Some rocks has been carved with steps to guide but for holding hand support its missing.. However once at the top feels worth the tough climb. The sunrise adventure was a little disappointing as clouds always ruins the beauty but never the less, the scenic beauty was just awesome.. Must visit if one is energetic & fit to climb odd steps.. We climbed from Hampi Bazar side . Happy trekking to Matanga

This was on our list from day 1, Matanga Hill is the most popular sunrise/sunset point, and every portal talked about it. So, when our local guide cum auto driver mentioned to avoid it, we didn't pay much attention. We started climbing in the early morning, before sunrise, it was dark, the steps were uneven, and at one point the trail was quite treacherous. and at one point it felt quite dangerous. Well, people were climbing with kids and babies but the steep climb without rails/proper steps was daunting. nothing to say about the view and that's what egged us forward, in the hindsight we should have just listened to our local guide's advice. there is another approach I am told which is better but one can access it only during daylight. So use that if you wish to climb this hill.

Matanga Hill is adjacent to Achyutaraya temple. We visited Matanga Hill for Sunrise. It is recommended to have someone who knows about the Sunrise point as we were not able to find the exact point by ourselves. Still we were able to spot a good sunrise.

The hike is surprisingly steep, and I realised that I had underestimated it. Please wear proper shoes and avoid the place immediately after rains.
The sunrise view from the top of the hill is spectacular. For photography enthusiasts, there are numerous opportunities for landscape photography from the vantage point of the hill.

Matanga Hill has a brilliant view for both sunset and sunrise. However the climb to the summit is very difficult. Although it takes 30-45 mins to get to the summit, navigating the rocks can be a challenge for elderly people. I would recommend this only for people who are comfortable trekking tough terrains.
For others my recommendations are:
1. Malyavant Parvat: You can drive almost to the summit
2. Anjanadri Hill: Birthplace of Hanuman. You will have to leave the vehicle at the foothill. But this hill has well built steps as compared to Matanga

One of the best place in Hampi and must visit around 5.30 am and reach at top before sun rise. Some places at top might look tough but if you see people around they go with so ease and motivate you too. Once you reach at top and see sunrise it will be in your memories forever. And once I came down and see the hill was surprised and bit shock also (in good way) to see the hill 😊
Last but not least the view of Virupaksha temple in lights and also after sun rise is so great
Without this visit you will miss out a great place in Hampi.

Visited Hill for sunset view. We parked our can near Hampi Bus stand and strolled towards hills which is 10 mins walk from the car parking. Started climbing hill up and reached to the top in just 25 minutes. The climbing hill isn’t very safe as the boulders are little curvy, slippery and there is nothing to hold for support. Don’t forget to carry water and a torch with you.
View from the hilltop is breath taking. You can get a 360 degree surreal view of Hampi displaying Virupaksha temple, Hampi Bazaar, Boulders scattered to the places on one side and green paddy fields, Anjaneya Hills on the other side of the Tungabhadra river.

Matanga Hill , then in treta YUGA it was a place of Rishi Matanga and now it is the mandatory go-to place for sunset and sunrise in Hampi .You vll just get lost in time with the breathtaking view you get from the top.The Ruins of Vijayanagara Empire , vibrations that we receive from the past glory of Ramayana epics and the sun rising behind the Kishkinda hills with its rays mildly falling on the paddy and banana planatation makes your experience and takes us back in time .
Must visit I say , Must visit !

Best to be part mountain goat. The tack up is not easy if your not sure on your feet. Be careful! Be especially careful near the top and its a long way down if you fall. I didnt get to the very top because im not great with heights and the track skirts around a rock very close to the edge.

Hi,
Planning to visit Matanaga hills. What time did you start your hike & how much time does it take? Can one visit with a 6-month-old kid? Would be helpful if you share your inputs :)
Thanks

The hill is the best spot to view sunrise and sunset. To reach the top of the hill, you need to climb atleast 250 steps. The stairs will be little slippery. Pls mind your steps during morning while climbing the hill. Pls return back soon in evening from the top of hill

How is the trek? Is it steps or is it rocks and boulders? Can old people make it? Climbing steps will not be a problem, but are there any steep or slippery rocks?
Written 6 August 2017
The steps are carved out of rocks and are not proper. I do not think it is a good idea for the elderly.
