Serene. Amazing autumn colors. Housing the mausoleum of Date Mitsumune. Must visit while in Matsushima bay area.

In the Fall each year this temple (though charging admission) puts on a night lighting of the gardens with the accentuated fall colors. It is a big thing many, many people all ages are there taking pictures.

I wasn't planning to go to this temple but saw it on the way to Matsushima Kaigan station and thought, why not?
I was glad I went. The place is bigger than I thought. There is a nice rock garden at the entrance, then the temple, some caves on the side, down to a rose garden, and a pond. It was very quiet - just what a Japanese garden should be.
I enjoyed my time there away from the crowds at Matsushima Pier.

I visited Entsuin after my visit to Zuiganji. This offers a totally different experience in that the temples are of a more modest size, though no less beautiful or impressive, and the gardens are also a major focus.
It’s a lovely place to stroll around and to take it all in.

This small garden in front of the temple is really beautiful and the highlight of any visit to Matsushima. Take your time to slowly walk around the gardens to take in the tranquility and beauty here.

It’s a rather small temple but well maintained and 300 yen are acceptable. Don’t miss the part behind the lake.

Autumn illuminations - a "gimmick" that works with the gorgeous colours of the trees effectively highlighted. Very crowded, as is typically the case with this kind of event. A classic Japanese contradiction between the quiet elegant simplicity of the temple's grounds and the crowds attending. Helpful staff. Nice trio playing on Western and Japanese instruments.

We would also like to know how easy it is to catch a train from Ishinomaki to Matsushima and get back in time before the cruise departs. Also cost of the train. We will be in port from 10am to 6pm

From Ishinomaki to Matsushima, one or two train every hour. The cruise departs a lot from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. You can get back easily before the cruise departs. Enjoy your trip!!
