This is mostly a driving forest. There aren't many hiking trails and the ones they have aren't long. Known tourist spots are scenic.

I worked for the National Forest through college. I have visited national parks across the central and east US, but this is by far one of the hidden gems. Camping is great, wildlife is beautiful, and the sites are well kept.

The Ozark Highland Trail is a great experience. Very well marked from Lake Fort Smith, AR to Tyler Bend State Park. Bits accessible at many points in between.
