A quick and entertaining 45 minute drive from Huaraz. This was my first solo hike of my time in Peru and thus made me slightly intimidated as other travel blogs said that the trail was quite difficult. I arrived for the hike having already spent 2 weeks in high altitudes around Arequipa and Cusco, thus I found the trail tough but not extremely difficult as others had said it would be. It took me an hour 20 to do the fast course. The sections with "ropes" or chains as they actually were was fun and a good challenge, but I can understand for some that these might be uncomfortable and thus taking the longer trail makes more sense as there are fewer rope sections. The laguna itself is beautiful and a great quick day trip idea; I was headed back to Huaraz on the 2 o'clock bus!

I was told that the hike to Laguna 69 was "a route of sweat", but I ensure you that the hike to churup was much harder.

The hike was all the way up, which I mean REALLY walking up the mountain for 2 9 or 3 hours without walking down or just a bit before the last hard climb.

The hike is TOUGHER than Laguna 69 not only because you have to hike at 4000m, but the last section of the route you have to climb up big rocks with black rope attached. I thought it was just 1 or 2 section of rock climbing, but NO, expect to climb for 4-5 sections. And it was REALLY a climb and if unfortunately you miss the rope, you will FALL OFF FROM THE MOUNTAIN. as a Asian with 1.63m, my legs and arms are not long enough to reach some part of the rope, so have to climb with both hands and feet. After this section, continue walking until you reach a stream, cross over and climbed along the stream. Finally, you will see the stunning, amazing, super tranquil and beautiful lake with 7 colors in front of you.

Note:
*TO SKIP THE CLIMBING OF ROCKS, there is another way to walk all the way up the mountain and reach the lake at the other side. It is much higher and longer, but is much easier.
*there are much much fewer people so you could really enjoy the quietness and peace there
*I could not say 69 or churup which one is better, because they are both beautiful in different way. 69 got blue lake and very near the snow mountains, while here is absolutely like a paradise that never been discovered, full of color and tranquility.
*bring SUGAR to fuel you up with the hard climb, and WATER.
*Don't bring too much things, lightly equipped as you have to climb.

This is an excellent acclimatization hike just outside of Huaraz, Peru.
The laguna is a beautiful destination and a bit of a challenge. It is a steep hike and the laguna is at 4,450m. Well worth the effort.

I loved this hike. I was constantly looking around at the incredible views, and the view of the lake and snow capped mountains behind is magnificent!
I’d also class it as medium, and probably difficult for those who have just arrived and haven’t yet acclimatised or done any other hikes recently.

Laguna Churup is situated on altitude of 4450 meters under mountain Churup (5.470m). The route is in the beginning quite easy (of course if you don't carry to much weight), in the end of the route you must climb two short uphill and you will soon see the beautiful laguna. We overnight there in the tent. During the night was very cold (- 10 degrees), however, very good for acllimmatization

Laguna Churup is a spectacular lake close to the town of Huaraz. Unlike the more popular Laguna 69, this lake sees less traffic and is much easier to get to. You can generally get a collectivo from the center of Huaraz for about 30 soles round trip. The collectivos leave every 30-40 mins until about 11 am. The best part is the driver will wait for you to finish the hike so you don't have to worry about finding a means of transport for the return back to Huaraz.
The hike is moderately intense with a gradual inclination. Don't under-estimate the hike though as it takes you at almost 4500 meters. The lake sits at the base of Nevado Churup the mountain with its namesake. If the weather is clear the mountain forms an excellent backdrop for the lake. Once at the lake you can walk along the rocky shore or sit and just enjoy the beauty. Return back the same way. The total hike time is roughly between 3-4 hours depending on your level of fitness.

We went to Laguna Churup yestreday without a guide. For me (and I'm of an average fitness level) it was a hard trek and especially this rope mandatory section… The thing is there was no rope in 2 highest parts of this section – no idea what happened, cause their were anchors but no rope in their, so we needed to climb totally without assecuration… I got panicked and it took 20 minutes to do this especially goind down. So mind this who are going to Laguna Churup and is not into climbing or afraid of the height.

The view though is amazing!

Take transport one way
~60soles taxi
I believe you could get a collectivo heading to Pitec
1 hour drive from Huaraz
Park entrance fee (none on voting or other
particular days)

Prepare for sun/wind/rain/hail/sun

Walk: 2 - 2.5hours
You can take a constant gradual ascent by staying left there is a lookout area up there
Or
You can take a steep ascent by staying right but this should be done by those comfortable with rock scrambling

On your return
After about 2pm you will need to walk to LLUPA (~1hour) to get a collectivo back to Huaraz. You will find the pathway leading there opposite the start of the hike. Just ask the taxi driver where you should walk back.
Before 2pm I believe there are colectivos in Pitec.

REMEMBER TO TAKE ALL YOUR RUBBISH BACK

This isn't for beginners or people afraid of heights. It's a relatively tough CLIMB. There are couple of sections which requires you to climb using ropes which are already affixed on the rocks. Do not go here in bad weather as it gets extremely slippery and it can snow/ rain pretty hard up there. Take the route on the left while going up - the other path requires you to climb an additional section with ropes

Very nice hike in Cordillera Blanca.
This is a high altitude hike with amazing surroundings. If you are in good condition it is not difficult but little tiring. Definitely worth to do it to see this beautiful lagoon.
