My family arrived as they were closing at noon for midday break. We returned later as it didn’t reopen until 4:00. It was dark, so we had to use flashlights to see. The building had creaking floors which looked as if you could fall through to the next floor. The items were impressive but it would be better in a nicer lit building.

Apparently the museum is not open all the time.
So we made an appointment.
We had a guided tour offered by a student.very knowledgeable.
The house were the museum is located is nice, but the museum itself should be part of the city’s next renovation project.
Presentation is outdated

This very centrally located archaeology museum is housed in a traditional house. Note, that even when the museum is open, the door is closed, just the lock is removed. But some perseverance is necessary to find it open! The courtyard probably houses the most visible enticing objects, however inside there is an archaic helmet, as well as Illyrian and Roman finds on display. Note that all the nicer items will be on display in Tirana, so most objects are shards, or rather small. There are some good pictures of archaeological sites with models nearby to display how the first inhabitants in this region lived. The display seemingly has never changed since the museum was formed. So, any information is only in Albanian, but the custodian will do its best to indicate what is in the rooms in limited English. However, if you are lucky enough to be there when the curator is there, he will allow you to handle some of the objects.

It's a small museum, very underfunded but worth a visit. The curator took his time and spoke with us about the artifacts and archaeology in general. Let's hope that the museum can grow, Albania has so many treasures.

Because the museum is located near the important Maliq site, I had great hopes for it. They have an abundance of items from not just Maliq and QR codes to take you to more information, if you have time to explore. They could use some help organizing the items, especially for English speakers, as I would prefer a label next to each item. (That really helps photography and labeling items back home.) They used the terminology "pes" that seems to be a Roman scale similar to a foot. Since I am not an expert, I wish I had taken note of this while there as in our hurry I was thinking it was a time grouping, rather than a level. Not everything is identified, and our own guide was more focused on Illyrian items than on the older ones or those in the Christian era, so I wish that I had tried to ask the museum staff. The QR codes do not activate from a computer screen (alas).
