t is possible to do a day hike at Cerro Castillo. Even though the tourist information says that this is hit possible. They will give you directions to a longer Conaf controlled route. Do not take this one.
If you stay at Villa Cero Castillo, walk towards on the mainroad towards Coyhaique and exit the main road to a gravel road to left of the road just before exiting the village.
After a 10 minute walk you will cross a bridge and see a cabin which sells entry to a privately owned trail (5.000 per person). You have to follow the orange poles/markings to the top. Just before the top, the markings stop but the trail is clear.
The hike starts quite easy but it will get more uphill after the forest. The last hour is a very steep climb on the mountain (this part has no vegetation, so you can recognize it easily).
The total climb for people who are quite sporty is about 3 hours. But it says that it is 4 hours. Total time is 7 a 8 hours they say. It really depends per person.
You will be rewarded with spectacular views! The lake has a beautiful colour and the mountains have such a nice shape. Make sure that you will get there at +/- 12 o clock. The clouds will have most likely disappeared and the winds which usually come during the day are not present yet.
Have fun. Enjoy this marvelous spot.

Please check out the January 29, 2017 review. It has excellent information about this hike.
Since 2017, they have made several changes. Many of the old orange poles are still in place. Red/white posts have been added for the first 4 km, which is on private land. The next 3 km are in National Reserve. At this point, the signs are yellow. Some of the old trail is now off limits. A much better trail has been built with stairs in certain places, one rope section and several direction signs. People used to get lost on the old trail - not any more.
When starting this hike, you need to understand that it involves 7 km each way plus 1,000 m of elevation gain. It is not for everyone. You are rewarded with outstanding views in all directions. I have hiked for many years and in several countries. This hike is definitely on my all-time top 25 list.
The suggested time is 7-8 hours. I am 65 but very fit. My time to the mirador was 2:39 and my return time was 1:54. I was feeling quite strong today. Everyone's time will be different. Take lots of water (I drank 2 liters), use liberal amounts of sun screen and take bug repellent. There are 2 places to refill your water bottles, but only 1 was acceptable today and was not far from the mirador.
The officials will not let you start this hike after a certain time. They also want you to return from the top at a set time. I recommend starting this hike no later than 12:00. For the best photos, I recommend starting about 9:00. At the mirador, I recommend walking 5 minutes higher to get better photos.
Enjoy.

Unlike most of the other reviews, my visit was basically a drive in the area. We did get out a few times and that wind is fierce! Make sure you hold on to your hat!

A must near Coyhaique. It takes a little more than 1 our to get there from Coyhaique. Te road is quite good and the landscape is wonderful, so is better to travel with time to stop and take pictures.
At Cerro Castillo village you can find facilities to have lunch or eat something, however there is not gas station so I recommend leave Coyhaique with the car full of gasoline.
***********

This is amazingly breath taking beautiful contact with pure unspoiled nature. The nature that people so mindlessly devastate in so-called 'first world'. Don't go there to spoil it - just be happy it's still there.

The hike to the laguna on Cerro Castillo was amazing- takes 5 hours total. Views of Lago Carrera are incredible on a clear day. It's a difficult hike (very steep) but well worth it! Can be cold at the top so bring layers.

National Reserve Cerro Castillo is one of our favourite ones in the Chilean Patagonia.
It offers a mixture of glaciers, snow topped mountains, spectacular lakes, rivers and waterfalls, and some great hiking trails.
What else do you need?

It have a good view from the city and the area. The longest trail, around 5 hours walk, is the best one, with great views.

You will love the beautiful rock formation "Cerro Castillo", and the two towns near there, Villa Cerro Castillo and Rio Ingeniero Ibanez, or as they refer to it here "Ibanez".

From the village "Villa Cerro Castillo" we were in a horse riding group from camping owner Cristobal. The horse ride too about two hours, sometimes very dusty. Climbing the hill would also heve required at least two hours when you are fit. After arriving in the park zone, the horses had a rest. The last hour was climbing on foot, but some untrained yoth required 1.5 hour. On the top is a great view of the crater lake and the glaciers. Deep down below the lake were come people camping.
The down walk was a little faster, but the whole tour required about 6-7 hours. When walking the whole trek it will be more.

We are currently in the planning stage of a self-drive trip to Chile (Lake District and Northern Patagonia) and will be staying in the Lago General Carrera area for a few days and possibly the Coyhaique area. We will be driving the Carratera Austral (not hiking-too old!) and interested in seeing (photographing) landscapes, animals and bird life so I would be very interested to hear from readers of the "must do" sights / areas to visit around this area. Thanks

hi john, sorry for the delay to answer...
some of the "must do" things in the general carrera area are visit the "catedrales de marmol" (marble cathedrals) in Puerto Rio Tranquilo (1h, boat trip, +- usd$30), the view of Castillo´s range from route 7 near Villa Cerro Castillo, also the "Salto del Rio Ibañez" a masive waterfall near Puerto Ingeniero Ibañez on the north side of the lake.
In Coyhaique area, you can drive a few km to the north (route 7) to take a full view of the city and Cerro Mackay. Also, you can take the route 240 to Puerto Aysen
