Juan Dolio is the best and closest beach from Santo Domingo. Would always go there because you can actually swim in hot and blue Caribbean water as well as there are chairs and umbrellas to rent. Across the street there are plenty restaurants but I definitely recommend to try El Sueño Ristorante.

This is a nice beach. That didn't have anyone renting out chairs for the day, and the sections for the public and private are not clearly marked or sectioned off. The beach is beautiful and there are nearby restaurants that are all within walking distance.

Juan Dolio could be used to describe the beach on the south coast of the country east of the Capital city of Santo Domingo, and/or it could be used to describe the ton and general area around this beach, or both.

The area which is about 7 kms long, and the beach can actually be divided into three separate and distinct areas. At the western end closest to Santo Domingo ins the original fishing village of Juan Dolio established in the 19th century. This is now often referred to as Old Juan Dolio to distinguish it from the area to the east.

The town like many in the area makes some of its income from tourism and there are several smaller and older hotels and restaurants/ bars that cater to both winter tourists from North America and more so weekend beach goers from Santo Domingo. In fact, many of the vacant lots in the town are now used at parking lots for this influx on the weekends.

At the eastern edge is what is often referred to as “new” Juan Dolio, or Playita Hemmingway or Villas Del Mar, after a resort complex. This is a complete contrast to old Juan Dolio. While the former does contain some new builds, condo buildings mainly, this area is almost exclusively new construction.

It runs I would estimate 9 or 10 blocks along the beachfront and a further 8 or so blocks deep inland reaching the Boulevard Juan Dolio. There are dozens of tall condos, most finished but several new builds under construction. Interspaced with them are several restaurants, bars and cafes, some appearing to be very high end, compared to those in the west in the older town. There are also grocery stores, pharmacies, gift shops, tour operators and banks with ATMS.

Separating the two edges is the middle area, which I would call the resort section. Most of it is taken up and bookended by two large all inclusive beach resorts Hodelpa Emotions to the east and Coral Costa Caribe to the west. There is a third resort further north Hodelpa Garden Suites built in the golf course. The abandoned and derelict remnants of another resort, the Decameron, lays between the two active beach resorts.

In addition there are several smaller resorts and hotels and some beachfront condo units. There are also a couple of small plazas and stand alone stores providing a place for those nearby guests to purchase essentials and souvenirs as needed. Banks,, a couple of bars and some restaurants both upscale beach front ones and simple snack bars are also located here.

The entire area is connected by and traversed by three routes, to the north is the Boulevard de Juan Dolio, below this is the Calle Principale which runs parallel to the sea. Finally there is the beach itself, the main attraction for the area.

The beach is quite good. A reef covers the central area by the resorts making swimming easier. At the western edge by the town there is a small cove. Although the centre and eastern edges have more or less blocked off access from Calle Principale aside from some right of ways it is still possible to walk the entirety of the beach.

One of the complaints is the litter often left by visitors. In the western section sadly, this is still true especially on weekends when the area becomes overcrowded. The other areas not so much. The resorts and upscale beach condos seem to be making an effort to keep their sections clean and this is eased by the somewhat restricted access.

In the east again the fact that the condos actually encroach on the beach with narrow access paths again make this section fairly clean and liter free. In fact signage prohibiting bottles and other items on the beach and the lack of food and drink vendors help with this effort.

Juan Dolio was once one of the first and preeminent vacation spots in the Dominican Republic. A Hurricane in 1998 however devastated the region and afterwards many tour and hotel operators moved east to Punta Cana and Bavaro.

However there has been a recent resurgence in the area, as evidenced by the numerous new build condos and other businesses, probably attracted by the relatively low cost of investing here. One example is the Emotions resort completely rebuilt and renovated on the site of the old Talanquera Beach Resort. Its also one of the best places to watch a spectacular sunset.

A good beach, normally clean water, safety, and good sand. Without a doubt, it is my preferred choice near to Santo Domingo.

Beautiful beach, lots of palm trees. But some public areas are very dirty (lots of garbage on the sand). Water color is beautiful. If you want to see unbelievable sunsets - you need to come here to Juan Dolio

It's overpriced bubble for local rich elite. Polished look, but not welcoming at all. The big NO for any pets, and even service animals for disabled people. You also can't go out of the area as it's simply dangerous.
All rich people have servants for carrying things, for intertwining their kids. It's weird artificial buble. Find another more friendly natural place in the world.
Dominican Republic in general very disappointing in terms of safety, cost and friendly environment.

Nice place for a day date. If you prefer more of the natural element, this is a good place. It is smaller than the tourists traps and more of a private experience. There was a place we stopped and the beach and water was great. Food was very very good also! Couldn't find it on here to give a review.

Aquarium Beach Club & Restaurant

The place closed a bit early so we went further along the coast. I would caution that some of the areas are night-and-day different! The clean beauty we experienced was horribly dirty and packed, just a few minutes further up the shore. It was mostly locals as boutique hotels and BnBs are being but and isolating sections.

This is a nice beach people can access from Camino de la playa in Juan Dolio. Many restaurants on this street offers a large variety of menu for every budget from fine dining to street food. There is no lifeguard and the sea is relatively profound with huge waves. Family with little kids have to be very careful with this.
