You walk, according to Mayan beliefs from the underworld to the heavens, the gods, following El Ceiba, the tree.
Nice setup for a museum. It would be even more interesting when all the audiovisuals would work.

Centrally located and easy to find, a recommended place to see. This museum has a few original Mayan pieces, as well as replicas. It is thoughtfully laid out to give you an accurate, as well as creative, account of how the Mayans lived and what it looked like in their day. Lighting and decor takes you back to the days of the Mayans. Great museum!

Pretty Kewl if you are into Mayan History, which I am sure many folks that visit the Yucatan are. Was hoping to see a little bit more on the Belizean Mayan History however that is not their main interest. Some of what I read did not match other sources for the same area.

Nice fancy buiding with sounds, lights, and colors. But, it lacks anything of great value for the price. (MXN110 per person as of Jan. 2023). This probably suits small children for educational purposes.

i don’t understand how this could be anything more than 1 star… the paintings were unimpressive & there was barely anything there. there’s so little to do in the city that you’ll end up here. i bet the local ford dealership is a more interesting cultural attraction lol

Large museum of Mayan history and culture in downtown Cherumal - at the southern end of Yucatn peninsula. Good overview of Mayan history and culture with many artifacts and dioramas. Good bookstore in courtyard on the way to the clean bathrooms with ample provision for visitors. It is dark and while it is generally accessible to wheelchairs and visitors with limited mobility - ramps to all three floors though I did not see an elevator - the signage is not always placed with wheelchair visitors in mind. We had a guide and found his explanations helpful. The presentation of the Mayan calendar and Mayan calculations on the base 20 were particularly helpful.
Across the courtyard is the city covered market. We found some local handicrafts around the back as well as clothing and other items for the local people.
Don't miss the murals in the state capital building on the waterfront or the large model of Chetumal before the reconstruction after the hurricane acrross the street from the capital building.

The museum was one of the "must see" places in Chetumal according to the visitors guide book I had. My wife and I have been to a lot of Mayan sites in Mexico, so we both were looking forward to visiting the museum. I think the problem for us was we had been to a lot of Mayan sites and visited many small museums and enjoyed the displays at those sites. Unfortunately, this museum didn't offer much in comparison to the places we've been. I do think it's worth a visit if you are in Chetumal, but depending on how much Mayan culture you've been exposed to, don't expect too much.

Near the marcado, a modern building with some marble floors, cool A.C., and a fine collection of Maya information, best suited for people with little experience, in other words a sort of introductory museum well worth the visit. Models of the three tower structure at Xpujil, the palace at Sayil, and othe iconic structures from places such as Hochob,Chicanna, Yaxchilan, Tikal, Copan, Chichen, and Tulum. A scale model of Pacals crypt cover, as well. Basic descriptions of Maya writing, and their calender system can also be seen. An impressive copy of one of the murals at Bonampak, by Pedro Davalos is probly worth the visit alone. The basement has a mock up of a 'sacred cave' with figures, pottery and a sound effects system. There is also a full scale copy of the burial crypt at Copan, of the son of SmokeImixGod K from year 695. Under a thick glass floor 4 to 6 feet below there is a model of the Palace at Palenque. Out side in the courtyard (there is no need to pay for this) there is a "Mayan" hut with a fireplace, rustic furnature and a few tools. The offices in this area contain an art gallery or 2, bookstore, and a few friendly workers home offices. Very spanish little english but I always visit this place when in Chetumal, the cabs are nearby at the market and is convient to further explore this sub tropical city especially after being in the drier part of the Yucatan north.

Innovative small museum with insightful & informative exhibits. Well designed, interesting for everyone. It's a limited museum but tells the amazing story of the Mayan civilization and its culture.

This is a nice, small museum. The exhibits have good explanations in both English & Spanish. The interior architecture consists of a series of ramps & platforms that allow for a wide perspective of some of the exhibits. One exhibit I especially liked was a copy of a mural from Bonampak. Entrance fee for foreigners is MX100. I recommend bringing a flashlight to read the descriptions because the interior appears to be purposely kept with low light.
