Authentic and busy local market. Lot of vegetables, souvenirs and clothes to buy. Great experience and a must see when in Nyaung-U!

This is a great market. I could have mooched around here for hours longer than we had at our disposal. The sellers were very gracious to all the tourists who clearly weren't going to be buying lots of fruit and vege. However, there also souvenir acquiring opportunities here.
A fun early morning visit.

Have opportunity to see what their market is like for the locals. Also gave chance to see the different types of veggies, fruits they have. Their tofu is yellow as they mix with turmeric powder.

One way to pack lighter...and to be under the weight allowance of the airlines is the knowledge acquired from past visits to Bagan that going to Nyaung U market I would find evrrything.Well...almost everything...
I needed a stylus for my tablet.I have two.
...at home, but in the last minute of packing, they remained at home.At the local NyaungU cellphone store they never heard about such a thing. I wasted my time, and the sales person's.time trying to explain.
I still.business there buying a larger cellphone with slightly larger keys
Good idea because I am using it right now.I am still amazed how the youngsters here can tap away messages so fast.Nobody has this
tinger like mine.Well...I also needed a SIM
Card and,a contract to buy.enough minutes .to call family back home. Change enough dollars at.the airport in Yangon, so.when you arrive at Bagan you can't leave the terminal only after paying the so-called archeological area tax.Loaded with kyats, now you can head back to Nyaung U market to complete.your shopping list.By the time I left the store, my phone was ready for.my first transpacific call but not before stopping at the nearby farmer's market to buy some fruit,a toenail clipper, shaving cream and flouride free toothpaste.
Ready to go home to my air-conditioned room, have a cold shower, fix me a cold cup of coffee and open my Trip Advisor application to write this review.
Bagan with it's over 2000 temples, pagodas of all sizes ha much more to offer than its archelogical storybook.
One such place not to skip must be Nyaung U's Market.

This place had both touristy and local feeling to it and it offers all the shopping you can do in Bagan for far more reasonable prices and this is the place locals shop.
Would defnitely recommd trying if you are not fussy about cleanliness and want to experience the real Myanmar. Skip the village tours of Bagan and visit here instead. Its gives more insights to local life and culture.
The market offers everything from food to clothes to souvenirs and fake lacquerware. we got the unmixed tea salad, tamarind flakes, lots of fabrics, bed covers, local spices etc. all at better prices than elsewhere. Better to have a local guide to help you bargain at clothes stalls and to translate.

I love a local market even if it is just fruit and vegies just for the explosion of colour and the variety of things on sale. This market has it all with touristy items as well as the local feel.Dont worry they are used to the tourist trade and no real bargains are to be had but worth the visit.Yes I did spend quite a bit of money and got some great things. Its hot, crowded and sometimes smelly but thats what markets are all about. If in Nyaung U make time for a quick visit

If it's your first Asian market, you'll enjoy it; else, it's OK as it's really a local market, and you can find real sellers and buyers trading food, clothes, … but you won't find out anything really new, excluding the thanaka white cream, sun protector, which everybody applies on the cheeks. Anyway we appreciate and consider positive the visit.
