While no Angkor Thom the gate/moat has the same feel. Violent times of competing empires. Eventually sacked by the Moguls breaking the spell and ending its part in history

Very nice hotel. Great swimming area. They could use some service supervision. When we checked in there were no towels in the room. I went to the desk and told them. Two hours later when I returned to the room there were still no towels. The next day when they did the room we got bath towels but no hand towels. We stayed there 2 nights. The first night the had a big crowd for dinner from outside. The restaurant was not opened until 730 and then there was a very limited menu. It was stick it to the staying guest because we have a big party. The next night dinner was fine

Food blah, expensive. 2:1 lemongrass monitor happy hour rocks. Head out to Moon or Ancient Bagan restaurants just outside for dinnwe.

A truly wonderful place to stay. Close to the main Bagan Plains sites, it’s a quiet oasis.
The rooms are great, spacious and yet comfortable to be in. The outside is beautiful, the setting atmospheric and the staff brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble. It’s also in walking distance of some loc al restaurants and definitely hire an e-scooter from the lady opposite the hotel entrance.

We loved this Gate and couldn't stop taking photos of horse carriages etc coming and going through it. It is so old and still standing strong. It is easy to find being on the main road between Bagan and Nyaung U. Plenty of parking space to stop and get out and take photos or videos.

Good and safe accommodation, service and food. The bar serves lovely cocktails for guests. Enjoy garden views from the front and back of your room. Romans are very big and clean. Very tranquil place.

The hotel is beautiful and located very central to all of Bagan. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food at the hotel is good. The best part of our visit was meeting the best employee Min Min. He went above and beyond!! Min Min took us to the best places and temples including some secret spots. Min Min was a monk in his previous life and has access to the old Bagan Monastery. He will show you hidden rooms and 900 year old scrolls. His English is great! And he speaks French, German, and Chinese. If you visit Bagan, please stay at Tharnbar, and most importantly ask for Min Min! If you have time ask for a Tuk Tuk driving lesson.

It’s a wonderful hotel. The bedroom is great but the best part is the gardens and the pool. You feel like you are in a secret place. The food is also great and not expensive.
It is really close to all the mais temples and there is a small Vilage in front of the hotel threat has e-bike rentals and a mini market.

We traveled to Bagan by car from Mandalay and returned ( after suggested by the hotel staff) by bus. The car organized by our travel agent cost circa €250 and the bus $9 per head. The bus took roughly the same time, stopped for comfort breaks and water was provided.
This underscores how helpful the front desk sstaff are.
The hotel is a series of garden rooms, all well furnished ,spacious and with outside seating. The restaurant is beside the pool and although the menu is standard each night ,the food is good. Breakfast is varied, plentiful and served in the same place.
This is a very informal and relaxing hotel with a lovely (if cold) swimming pool.
The front desk is housed in a separate building and exits onto the dusty busy streets of Bagan. There is an ATM very close to the hotel exit which is useful for local cash.
The front desk staff can organize everything but need much advance notice for the (expensive) but impressive balloon trips.
We enjoyed Mandalay very much when we stayed there but we loved Bagan and all stress disappeared at the Hotel at Tharabar Gate. It really is a restful place with great staff- would strongly recommend it.

This is the only gate still standing from the walls that were built around the 9th Century and used to surround Old Bagan and is, in my opinion at least, quite interesting.
Set into the pillars on each side are two Nat entities that still "guard" the entrance. To the left is Lord Handsome and to the right is his sister Beautiful Face (we found some variations on these two names). Neither of these Nat are forgotten by the locals as, whenever we went past, there were fresh flowers and offerings for each of them.
We have discovered that local government also believes this gate has merit as they have banned its use by heavy trucks - and a good thing too, as we are sure the vibration from these trucks has been doing damage to the fragile structure.
We found that we went through the gate many times during our stays in Bagan and it is likely true for any visitor. Take one or more opportunities to do as we did and stop by.
