So what all will you need to plan for it and what will you experience... read on:
We had our puffer jackets, a lot of Decathlon stuff (snow socks, caps, gloves, kids snow boots (they have 2 kinds, the black high boots are useful other one which is ankle length and water and snow proof is not). Multiple socks came in handy later as kids boots on hire are of bad build, they get super cold and snow does seep in.
In March end there was a lot of snow which had firmed up and that's good because the hired boots sink in deep in fresh snow and that causes your kid to shiver after the initial euphoria of snow slides away (around an hour into the experience:)
All valid in the months of snow- Pack 2 socks atleast.
Queues are not long, we reached at peak hours BUT a guide was helpful nonetheless (paid 600rs).
Cards are accepted at the Gulmarg booking office, airport booking counter was closed and looked like it never opens.
Gondola and snow bike rates are fixed no haggling at the counter needed.
Ski is not recommended(for first timers), not safe or worth even when you hire an instructor for 1000rs apart from your own ski expenses.
Food is available at a costlier price but look around, it must be difficult to get stuff that high up. The food stalls are next to the snow bike office. We had veg kashmiri pulao which was decent and best amongst other items that we ordered.
Washrooms are on paid basis, carry change (10rs per use).
Sledge is available from the first point until booking office, locals drag these. They charged us 1100 for each, kids accompanied us on our sledge. Bargaining needed. You may walk upto the booking office if you are put off by the sight of the initial slope that these sledges take. Took us around 15 mins to sledge our way to the booking office, so choose for yourselves.
There is a parked trailer washroom that is available at the starting point of the walk/sledge (it's always filthy), then there is a washroom near booking office and also 2 washrooms at the higher peaks, one where the gondola ride ends and another near food stalls.
All along, chocolate, biscuits, chips are available by vendors who are eyeing your kid to go up in that tantrum frenzy, either carry it or cough up double or more. Guides do carry your bag for you so pack wisely!
Use filter by month on TA to check weather conditions and recommendations from fellow travellers. Not all months have snow as per locals.

First of all I would like to say we were lucky that we got bright and sunny weather which is absolutely boon to enjoy the low/freezing temperatures of Gulmarg. Sun beating down the snow clad mountains and ranges made it even more beautiful.
We went for the day visit and thus had to take the sledge to reach and come back from the gondola base...
It is about 3 kms each side from the parking lot and with ice covered all over it is extremely difficult to walk 3kms.
We took the boots from tanmarg which our driver arranged for us and boots are very important to walk in ice.Alternatively one can can walk through the road..

The gondola had upto 2 levels with 750 rs/person for upto first level and another 800 rs/person for the 2nd level. Since there was enough snow in level 1 and all the activities such as Skiing, motorbiking, sledging were happening in level1 we didn't go for level 2.Level 2 is mostly during summers when there is no ice in level 1.Both me nd my son did skiing for almost 45-60 mins and enjoyed playing with snow..
There is heavy bargaining in these places for these activities and even though they would say one can skii for many hours but personally I think no one can do it for more than 60 mins unless professional. They provide you training and help you in skiing but it definitely difficult and tiring to skii..

After spending time for almost 2 hours we took the return gondola and then back sledge to the parking lot. Some may suggest to come back sledging from level 1 but I personally felt gondola was better anyday.

There are lot of restaurants/eateries around the parking lot where we had our lunch..

Me and my family had a great time enjoying the beautiful and natural snow clad mountains and ranges and would love to b back next time..

Gandola ride is something which cannot be missed if you are visiting Gulmarg. They have 2 phases. First phase get snow melted early while 2nd phase have snow for longer duration being on height of ~14000ft from sea level. 2nd phase have a lot of wind as well with less tourist so should be visited.

Everyone will keep saying that take a guide to buy ticket and prioritise but you can buy same online at J&k cable car website. We have not taken guide as don’t see any advantage of him.

2nd Phase: Clean snow as a lot less tourist go there compared to phase-1. No food joint and a lot of wind so be ready to fill the chill. You get Skiing and sledging there. In skiing person will do the skiing ~500m and you will hold him from back. They will ask you up-to 2000Rs but don’t give more than 500Rs (you need to negotiate hard although). They will say they will show LOC but that just another snow-capped mountain which will be shown after 500m snow skiing. You can play with good snow and click some good photograph.

1st Phase: Depend on season you might get snow or only grass land. We got snow. There are a lot of food joint with a very lavish newly opened restaurant from Kalohi Hotel. If there is snow then no of activity offered are Skiing(here you can try yourself), sledging and snow bike. Snow bike have 2 rate (1000 and 2000Rs) 1000Rs for smaller round and 2000Rs for bigger round. In both round driver allow you to drive by yourself.

Boots and jacket can be rented from market with 100Rs each for 1 day.

I am writing this piece of information after my recent visit to the Gulmarg Gondola in Sep 2021. A humble request to all the readers - neither hire any guide to buy tickets nor believe anyone saying that he’ll show you places. There is a counter where you can buy your tickets and travel. Here i was careful not to hire any guide from the base, unfortunately fell a trap and was flattered by a person’s speech. He convinced me saying that he is an employee of the Gondola and he can help me in avoiding long queues. He requested just 200₹. The same way he kept his words and took us comfortably to phase 2. Once we reached he took us straight to a person who rents jackets and rubber boots. He quoted a price of 8000₹ for renting an old, half-torn jacket and a rubber shoe. The guide person finally asked us to settle for ₹4000, and we settled for ₹3500. (Note: the person told the price is inclusive of jackets, boots, skiing equipments, and a full time guide). So i thought it was a legit call and paid him the price. To my surprise, there was very little snow and the hard part is they had a common snow path where a person keeps skating from one end to the other(total distance would be 20 m approx). We need to hop on with him
In his skiing equipment and he would take us to one end and similarly bring us back.We were really saddened by the fact that we were cheated terribly. So my humble request to all the tourists visiting Gulmarg Gondola - pay only a fraction of the price quoted by anyone(incase its undeniable service). Dont hesitate to drop your plan or activity if you feel the locals are bot settling for lesser amount.

Gondola Gulmarg happens to be the only tourist attraction for locals to survive on. Obviously as we went post covid, we saw a desperation with the local people and hats of to their hard-work. The line system for the Gondola can definitely be managed better. We left our hotel 20 min away from Gondola and reached early morning 7:30 am. We were the first on the que and slowly could see people flocking for the ride. All the agents slowly cover the front entry and block the line for their guests perhaps relishing breakfast in the hotel. Slowly by 8:45 the gates were opened and I almost feared a stampede the way entire crowd rushed in. There are multiple gates for entry and you have to cross each level. We almost felt as if we won a gold medal when we reached the last gate and were about to board the cable car. But life isn’t so easy. From the exit gates, some guests were allowed to get it, while all of us waiting since morning with valid tickets, were made to wait some more time. Finally, after we shouted and fought for it, our gates were opened and we boarded the green gondola till phase 1.

Now, there’s no waiting here as we had our tickets till the second phase. So we ran again for the second phase line. The most pathetic part is that the people working here (staff) also board the gondolas Same time as you. They have reach the top before you so that they can start providing the sledge and skee services. So we waited again for 20 mins and only could board next gondola for second phase. The views after reaching the second phase is breathtaking but too commercialised by the locals. They charge 2k per person for a sledge that’s only about few steps. We chose to climb on foot. It’s easy if you follow certain smart techniques else falling could be dangerous so plan that on your own choice. They don’t provide sticks on purpose so you can choose to buy folding sticks from decathlon. The all season snow repellant shoes from Decathlon are great. No need to buy gum boots on rent from there. There are no washrooms on second phase. Since we went in start of summer, we didn’t need many jackets on top. However, it’s advisable to carry a bag pack with ale snacks, water, juice and few woollens.

For us, Gondola was one time memorable bitter sweet experience.

As beautiful as gulmarg is but the gondola management/administration strive really hard to make it as pathetic as possible.

I have been going to gulmarg for the last 8 years. The gondola cabins itself are not that bad . But the overall management of the gondola system in terms of lines, power outages , getting in and off the gondola are pathetic. The exit and of phase 1 gondola is dangerous to life itself . And eveb more so if you are a skier. They are metal steps. So easy to slip with the wet steps and ski boots. All they need to do is create a simple matting that they have on the platform to get on and off the cabins. The management has a do not care attitude towards safety . One slip and one can easily break a bone or worse die of one hits the head. Considering 740 per person is what they charge per day i am sure they can afford to put simple skid proof mats or other measures.

The steps of the exit of phase 2 is even worse. Half the steps are broken . As if falling and hurting yourself was not enough now one has tk worry of not gstting cut by broken metal steps .

Hygine is something I believe that the gondola administration are oblivious to. In such covid times there is absolutely zero sanitation of the cabins. No one wears a mask . Most of the people have leaking noses due to the cold.

Gulmarg cable car made us wait in the queue for 3.5 hrs just to go to first stage. A guide hooked up with us for Rs.600/- at Gulmarg promising that he will get us tickets for stage-2 and that we will not have to wait in the queue; which we discovered later to be a farce. Tickets are allowed only online and should be taken days ahead; and Guides have no role or influence there. Your tickets can get cancelled any time based on weather. Gulmarg is not worth visiting if you cannot go to stage-2 and the waiting time is a real pain. Think twice before choosing to visit Gulmarg.

Gulmerg Gondola ride - when we went in mid April 2 phases were working .
You need to book online
Time is 830 to 5 pm
When we went in early morning we were first at gate.
Gate opened late around 915 am
When we went inside despite we being fist at gate already 20 people were standing in front of us inside ,who probably got back door entry from gov officials after paying extra.
Place is not managed well by government officials
Lot of guides at gate who will try to lure you saying u will gate first entry be aware.
Inside phase one for ice u need to go around 1km easily walking distance no need to hire horses.
If u want to hire bargain 1k per person not more than that.
For ice bike bargain 400 per person
Sledge not good
Place is extremely beautiful and must visit
Better to visit early morning when less rush and bright sunlight there
Must carry raincoat ,umbrella, jacket

The review is strictly for August-September as we visited during the monsoon and there was no snow to speak of on either phase 1 or 2. Further, the landscape to the 2nd phase is pretty barren and there was a dense fog, so we could hardly see anything. While the gondola is undoubtedly an architectural wonder, if you have previously experienced cable car ride, there is nothing new in terms of the experience. Even the ticket prices are not transparent and we had to book through an agent who charged us INR 1700 per person for both phases. He also pushed a guide on to us though it was never requested and later demanded money for his services, which we refused. The locals do not waste any opportunity to fleece the tourists and it becomes very exhausting after a point to fend off touts, ponywalas, vendors agents, etc. Overall, I would not recommend Gulmarg during the months of July-Nov, as the place is not worth the hassle and cost.

The good first, what a place on earth!!!. Really mesmerising. Once you get down from the gondola at the first stage, you would see a very vast and beautiful valley spread across acres and acres. If you stroll across the valley u will come to the edge of it from where you can enjoy the beauty of the Himalayan range all around you. We did not choose to go to the second stage as there was no snow in the mountains.
Now the bad 😞. Inspite of buying tickets in advance the queues are serpentine and the waiting is for hours. The ever pestering so called guides will get ur wallet thinner.these guides will force you to go for a local tour in an expensive taxi to hardly enjoyable places. Locals here can be not so friendly.
