The waterfalls at Materuni are stunning and I would strongly encourage tourists to visit this site however it would be remiss of me not to also give an account of how this experience left a bad taste in the mouth.

On arrival in Materuni we were surrounded by ‘official’ tour guides and confronted with a sign which states that it is mandatory to have a guide for the falls. We were also asked to pay an entrance fee of 20k Tsh pp. at a very unofficial looking desk and were given no receipt. Given that I had heard it was a 20 minute hike to the falls I declined to take a guide and was told that this was against the rules. How I would come to rue that decision.

We left our bikes in the care of one of the guides and proceeded to hike on our own to the falls which was lovely. On our return we found that the person who had agreed to watch our things had disappeared and some of our kit had been stolen. I was blackmailed by the chief guide who was highly aggressive and had been identified by the other villagers as the thief. After 2 hours and a 40k Tsh bribe my clothes were returned and I was rudely told that I should learn my lesson to follow the rules.

I suppose I should have taken a guide but it is a very unpleasant experience to be hassled by a group of unofficial youths. I really enjoyed the falls but overall I wish I had never gone as it was a very stressful day and tainted an otherwise wonderful time in Moshi. If you do decide to see these falls then keep your wits about you and I’d recommend booking through a tour agency in Moshi to avoid having to deal with this kind of extortion.

Having lived in Africa for 6 years this is the worst experience I’ve had and also a complete anomaly. It’s such a shame that a few bad eggs can really spoil what should be a wonderful experience.

We really enjoyed the excursion to Materuni waterfalls after our successful Kilimanjaro trek. Musa of Kili Team Adventures put together this outing on a very short notice and we are glad to have taken the time for it.
We were quite lucky that there was little traffic on that day as there was only one other small group at the site.
Its a beautiful and very relaxing place to cool off after the tough Kilimanjaro.

Our primary aim of visiting northern Tanzania was to do a wildlife safari across the great northern parks. But after some discussion with my family we decided to add 3 days of cultural tours and Materuni village was among the choices we had. Many thanks to Angelo (Angelino Adventures) who proposed this tour.

We arrive to the village around 10 AM and got a warm welcome from our tour guide, Jerry. We started with a coffee tour which was simply fascinating. We also got a chance to prepare and taste a cup of coffee. Then we walked to the materuni waterfalls. The village environment is simply spectacular. The villagers are very nice and friendly. On our way back we saw 2 chameleons and my daughter was so excited to see them. Before we drove back to our hotel in Moshi town we had a delicious lunch full of local dishes. I really liked the pilau (rice mixed with meat and spices).

The village tour, coffee tour, and the waterfalls were absolutely amazing. If you have an extra day or two in Moshi i totally recommend Materuni Village.

Well worth the visit if you have a spare day in Moshi. Beautiful location, the water is very cold and deep so do not go in if you cannot swim. It's dangerous and I have heard some sad stories of people who enter who cannot swim. The guides can be a bit money grabbing at the "entrance" so be prepared to haggle. Regardless, it's still great to go and I will be taking friends there in the future.

I have been traveling in Tanzania for 3 weeks but this was definitely the worst experience. We travelled with Dala Dala and already one stop before the Materuni village a guy hopped in and explained that we need to pay for a guide and entrance fee to the falls. We got out of the car and we weren’t sure if we want to go to the waterfalls or just do the coffee experience so we wanted to walk around the village and decide. 2 people started to follow us and said that we cannot even walk in the village unless we paid the official entrance fee. We have opened our book guide and wanted to read about the area - we were just standing there. The two guys insisted that we need to pay them. They started to be aggressive and even screaming at us. We gave up and went with them to the official office which was only a table with one guest book. Nowhere was written anything about the fees or rules. We wanted to see some official badge or document from them but they were not able to provide anything. We decided to leave the village and about 10 men were screaming at us that we should go back to our country. I even think that the “official office” is not set up by the government but by a group of village individuals themselves to rip off tourists. The waterfalls might be beautiful but the hustle before is not worth it.

These falls are beautiful and the hike to get there is around 40 mins from the parking area. It was very sad to see that tourists and tourist operators did not seem to care enough about protecting the environment as plastic bottles were visible throughout the hike and at the bottom of the water fall. Locals overseeing the falls were instead very good at charging the entrance fee but not eager enough to tell people not to throw the trash away during the hike ( they only clean once a week, on Mondays, which is clearly not enough). Tourists should be more mindful and keep their trash until they are back from the trail where they can put it away. I took a picture of all the bottles my group picked up on our way back from the water fall.

Unfortunately we ran out of hands and space in our bags to pick them all up so if you want to do the extra mile, bring your bag and collect them too: we only have one planet Earth!
