About Afro Whale Shark Safari
Join us for a memorable and safe experience swimming with Whale Sharks on Mafia Island. We are one of the few local owned and run companies on the island! Because our team grew up on Mafia (most of us used to be fisherman) we know the waters well and always work hard to make sure you have the best chances possible to swim with the sharks. We look forward to giving you a warm welcome soon. Karibu!! We are also able to help you with accommodation (in our beachside bungalows), flights and snorkelling tours during your stay on Mafia.

We were lucky to have a pretty exclusive sighting of multiple whale sharks on our first day. Afro and his team are truly awesome and we were one of the only boats out to sea swimming alongside the animals. Team is highly experienced and has great service + competitive pricing. Afro is also a local from Mafia island so great to support local business owners 👍🏻

It’s one of the whale sharks operators on the island. Our experience was mixed but we are still happy we had a brief encounter with the whale shark. Their boats have small engines so it took a while to get to places where the sharks are seen. The ladder in the boat was extremely inconvenient and people couldn’t climb back to the boat. The car which picked us up from the hotel, a 50 yo land rover, broke down half way. However, the guys on the boat were quite experienced and we managed to see the shark after four hours of searching.

We had a magical week at Afro’s bungalows, and swam with the whale sharks on every day of our 3 shark safaris. Afro and his team know where the sharks will be, providing the best opportunity to see and swim with them, but at the same time they are passionate about protecting these gentle giants and ensured we didn’t endanger their well-being. The bungalows are simple but very clean and comfortable - shout out for the super-comfy mattresses! And as for the team, we were treated like family from the moment we arrived. There isn’t a thing that this happy, smiley and amazing little team wouldn’t do to make your stay as special as possible, and anything from motorbike hire to laundry can be arranged. Thank you so much to Afro, Juma, Carmela, Messi and all the others - you made our trip so special, and we have many happy memories of the whale sharks and you all. We will definitely be back.

Had a great experience with Afro's - a tuk tuk was provided on time to pick me up from my accommodation to take me to the site, and afro and his team provided an excellent experience - full of experience and knowledge of the whale sharks, and we were only around 10 minutes in the bay before our first sighting. I find with some similar experiences (I DO NOT recommend dolphin watching in zanzibar for example) that the operators do not respect the animals but this was NOT the case with Afros - we were given a briefing on respectfully swimming with the whale sharks, and the boat did not in any way operate to chase or intimidate the whale sharks. There were some others in the tour who were not as comfortable in the water, and afro and the team made sure they had a guide accompanying them in the water to enjoy the experience in comfort. Can't speak highly enough of the experience.

Afro Whale Shark Company has friendly guides and their prices are fair. I paid for a one day tour of swimming with the Whale Sharks but ended up going for a second tour the next day for free, when they found out that I didn’t get good under water photos. They really wanted me to have a great experience and also memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life and what better way to capture a memory than on a Photo. I am very grateful to Afro and his team, shout out to my personal life guard Ally Messi, The captain Hamisi and my host Pascal for being so friendly to me and treating me as part of the crew, I would recommend them to anyone and I am surely returning to Mafia for this experience with my family next year.
