Unfortunately, we only had time for a short (couple of hours) stopover here, but it's well worth a stop even if you have only a few minutes to stretch your legs. Higher density of birds here than anywhere else we visited, and there are lots of big, showy ones that will interest anyone (storks, eagles, vultures....). For the geeks -- lesser jacana :)

I must say that I saw plenty of birds when I came here; I even saw some new species. The only reason why I don't rate it higher is that Lake Ziway is not an especially beautiful lake.

We went out by boat to look at the monastery across the lake that hid the Arc of the Covenant for many years. It’s about an hour and a half ride to the other side, to get to the island. When we arrived we were told it was a long walk and not easily done. We saw the new church and the museum of ancient books and robes. They are in a glass case but need better attention tot keep them from degrading. There’s a small Christian town on the island, too and we were greeted by the local clhildren. The local priest was out tilling the field, but he came and opened the church up for us. There is a small island that we stopped by on the way back that was rife with bird life. Many species, all hanging there together.

Lake Ziway, 160 km south of Addis Ababa, is the nearest Rift Valley LAke of Ethiopia to Addis Ababa. Lake Ziway can be visited in a day tour from Addis Ababa. The lake has a number of lowland water birds and it is possible to see the birds nesting island and see few hippos around.

I stayed in a nearby hotel and benefited from fresh Tilapia daily. There is a fish market in the morning, boats that can be rented to take you to the various islands and of course all of the pelicans. Actually traveled prior to October 2018 but it would not let me put the actual date. I was there in August, at the end of the rainy season.

This would be much nicer on a sunny day but when it is cloudy take warm clothes instead. When booking trip through the guide association be clear what it includes. They have a schedule of prices in the office which it is good idea I had looked at as they tried to add guide fee again when came to pay. I saw one hippo. Bird Island was crammed with bits as I sailed by. The walk on the other island is not difficult . The walk to the viewpoint also not difficult giving 2 opportunities to get off boat and stretch legs. N.b. - you may be told you will be taken to a good birdwatching area for a fee which seems reasonable. It turned out this was Bochessa which is in fact free and easy to get to with a car so felt a bit ripped off.

Third time in 10 years we go to Ziway. Birds are numerous and not scared. The light is wonderful for photography. Did not stay at Bekele Mola, unlike the first two times, but at Hubachiisa, a very clean and quiet pension located in the street that leads to the famous jetty, one minute on foot away from the gate. First room in ten days with a normal bathroom : nothing broken, hot water, and a good firm mattress, 500b. Hailé Resort (36$) and Bethleem Hotel (same rate as the pension, beautiful but busy and noisy) almost next door, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And there's WiFi! The entrance to the jetty is not free any longer : foreigners must pay 50b for 2 days. The guys at the gate office explain it's for helping protect the area, which is a joke considering how people do not care at all about the environment. There's more concrete now at the end of the jetty, more garbage everywhere, more carts hauled by abused horses and donkeys. Still, as bird lovers we enjoyed it very much and even bought a 2-hour 500b tour with a guide to Womecha peninsula (not sure about the name), after 4km southeast by bajaj, where we found a splendid saddlebill stork wading by the shore with her two chicks.
