This village is located next to the outer rim of the Rano Kau volcano crater. The restored homes of these ancient peoples was interesting. They lived in rock houses with domed ceilings and had a small crawl space to enter and exit. One the backside you can clearly see the volcano and inner lagoon. The view are pretty cool here.
BOTTOM LINE: This site is a national park and requires a daily $80 Rapa Nui park pass per person. It will allow you to enter all the island parks on the date issued. Orongo Village was less than what I was hoping to see. Is it worth seeing, sure. Primarily you will only see some 17 rock huts and great ocean views. The visitor center is helpful to see what happened here at this site. The trail trail around the main site takes about a 30 to 45 minutes to walk around the dirt path. Restrooms are available but they charge a fee. Those with mobility problems and need walkers or jazzy's cannot get around here. A walking stick is helpful. MY RATING: 7/10.

i hiked to the crater from hanga roa town. it’s easy enough to do but obviously all uphill. bring water, apply sunscreen and wear a hat because there’s little shade available. the views of town below are stunning and it’s a nice way to arrive unless you’re in your own vehicle or on a tour.
the crater is amazing to behold. to be honest, photos just aren’t going to do it justice but they surely give you a sense of what you’ll see upon arrival.
there’s two ways to get to orongo—the road the cars follow and a trail atop the perimeter of the crater, which is what we took.
i’m not someone who loves museums and wants to spend hours in them reading all the info and displays; i’d rather stroll around and look at whatever catches my eye, but i will say that the bilingual explanations here were stellar and so fascinating! the history of the culture and competitions held here would captivate anyone so make sure to read and understand before you head outside to look at what awaits. the views and understanding to be gained from where/how people lived really helped to round out the knowledge you gain from seeing moai and learning more around the island.
i truly appreciated the information presented at orongo and it remains in my mind one of the highlights of my stay on the island.

Archaeological site located in the volcano near Hanga Roa. It is located within the national park and can only be visited with ticket and guide. In the site, there are the ancient buildings of the last period of the Rapa Nui civilization, from where men left for the challenge of the bird man towards the small island on the coast. There are several places of interest in the region with many engravings on the stones.

Place where the participants of the bird man competition stayed looking for eggs from rare birds on the island in front. There is a small museum that tells the whole story in the visitor center. But the look is beautiful.

You need a park ticket (USD $80) paid by credit card only. The crater (Orongo) can only be visited once and always with a guide. The three places you can visit without a guide are Anakena & Ovahe beaches and Tahai in town. Has a stone "village" consisting of a collection of low, sod-covered, windowless, round-walled buildings with even lower doors positioned on the high south-westerly tip of the large volcanic caldera called Rano Kau.

Impressive views, at the top of the island, part of history, from where the birdman competition took place on the islet. It must go.
You must present an entrance ticket to the national park, with an identification document and also go with a certified guide.
It is very windy and sometimes they close it for the same reason.

A wonderful place. The wind is very strong. In fact, if you had increased your speed, you are not allowed in. Definitely use windbreaker and trekking shoe. By the time we went, it's winter, so wearing something warm, it doesn't hurt.

From Rano Kau’s crater we continued a short way further to the last stop of our amazing tour. The O’rongo Village. We freely admit we hadn’t been particularly interested in the Birdman ceremony - we were all about the Moai. Thankfully we had our excellent guide who pointed out all sorts of of important archeological features of the area and explained the Birdman proceedings. Visiting this place was a great way to finish the day.

Great place to get great views of the ocean, coast and the three rock islands.
The volcano caldera is also quite impressive and worth the hike ip to the top.
Some nice historical structures as well.
Pleasant way to spend the morning.

This is one of the few places one can get sufficiently informed about without the aid of guides, because there are posters explaining the history of the place, with a great map that points to each attraction existent there. I wish all ahus would be like this - or maybe at least the main ones.
This is the other site one can get into only once with the Rapa Nui National Park ticket - together with Rano Raraku -, which I find a bit sad because of their importance. Nevertheless, one visit is enough to see it all.
The view to Motu Nui Island is amazing, and no pictures do justice to this. The shades of blue one can see from Orongo whilst looking to this place are completely dazzling. Another great site for those who are looking for deeper knowledge about the history and culture of Rapa Nui people!
