Along with Rievaulx and Fountains Abbeys, Byland Abbey was once one of the greatest Cistercian monasteries in the north of England. It boasts some of the earliest Gothic architecture in northern England as well as internationally significant medieval floor tile pavements. Much of the church survives to a great height, including the fantastic rose window, and the remains of the domestic buildings are extensive. There is also a museum packed with artefacts found on site and beautifully illustrated interpretation panels, which give visitors an insight into monastic life.

There is also much to interest nature lovers as many varieties of wild flowers grow on the ruins of the abbey and a multitude of birds and small mammals can be seen around the site, including kestrels, buzzards and hedgehogs.

Very nice lunch at the tearoom. Abbey is wonderful and not as busy as Rievaulx. Well worth a visit. Stanley enjoyed it too and was made very welcome by the staff!

Impressive Abbey, the circular window to the entrance is the largest circular window on a abbey in europe and was replicated throughout europe, the original largest circular window in it`s day in western europe. The grounds are stunning, full of history and great for hide and seek. 10 out of 10.

It's worth the entry to stroll around this stunning abbey. There is a small museum outlining the history and displaying some of the items found at the abbey. We found spending the three pound on the info booklet a good investment for even more details and understanding.

Preserved by English Heritage, this ruin is extensive and much of it can be seen from the road. We had no option as we arrived after closing. Nevertheless, it is quite spectacular even from the outside.

From the road this Abbey is very deceptive, it looks very small but enter the grounds and you are pleasantly surprised with a lot of remaining ruined areas which are ideal for kids to climb on and play hide and seak. I went with my 6 year old who loved it, it's a ruin obviously but on a nice day... More

The site itself is stunning however this is let down by the lack of information boards and no audio guide. They try to get you to buy a guide book but we decided to use the free information and map on the English Heritage website. The ruins are well worth a visit and, as the original layout of the buildings... More

Byland abbey is quite a ruined abbey but being a decent size there is quite a lot of the lower part of it remaining. You can pay to get in and wander the grounds but there is nothing you can't see from following the public footpath around the outer edge.

When the official visitor centre is closed, it is still possible to walk along the road and take in the enormous scale of what this monastery would have looked like. Well worth a few minutes.
