It's a Norman Castle...of course its ruined

Firstly lets set the record straight...the wooden stairs are in no way rickety and the spiral stairs inside the castle are concrete so you will be perfectly safe going all the way... read more

Firstly lets set the record straight...the wooden stairs are in no way rickety and the spiral stairs inside the castle are concrete so you will be perfectly safe going all the way to the top for a magnificent view. Being the favourite home of Richard III there are always Ricardians there who would be delighted to explain the castle's history... More

Although it was February when we visited it was all closed, so we could not go inside, but could see that there was only a wooded hut through the arch way. We walked all round the out side of the castle, and could see a wooded stairway up to the top looked rickety, most of it has fallen down. We... More

This castle is managed by English Heritage, we got free admission as members but not sure about the cost for admission. We bought a guide book, very informative, which contained a map and we were able to visualise what it would have looked like before. There are lots of steps up to the various levels, including a stone spiral staircase... More

I know that I could have bought a guide on top of the modest admission fee, but hoped that there would be more information around the site on boards. I think that there were only 4 boards around the whole castle and two of those were the same. As with most castles though, lovely location.

Had a lovely Sunday morning walking round this castle. Got a good guide book and we loved exploring through the ruins. Very evocative and we could imagine great banquets taking place in the great hall. Good value for money

A brilliant place to visit . so much to see and do. Scared the kids with the dungeon and the way that the doors seemed to open by themselves.

I have two small boys who, when they are not "Ninja" love tearing round ruined castles! It was a cold, clear Sunday and the views were breathtaking. I didn't know until I had time to read the information board at the top of the tower that there was a more lowly castle here, behind the location of this one. You... More

Well preserved ruins with tonnes of history behind them. Some of the better castle ruins that we have visited and we really couldn't grumble at the £5 each entry fee as it was well worth it. Great views from the top and plenty to learn.

An English Heritage site that's worth visiting. War of the Roses fans will love exploring the remains of what was Richard the 3rds home. Some of the old castle is still intact and climbing the tower for a view is a must do. Don't forget to explore the village of Middleham - now home for several race horse stables.
