About
Tarifa is a bridge between Europe and Africa and divides the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. The city occupies a strategic place in a legendary zone, “The Pillars of Hercules”. That’s the reason why it was inhabited from prehistoric times to this day, by Phoenicians, Romans, Muslims and Christians, upon this rocky peninsula, the most southern point of Europe. The castle was built in 960, by the Omeyyad Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, giving rise to the defensive enclosure that we see today, one of the best preserved in Spain. The Castle, which today show what has resulted from the addition of defensive structures (gates, towers, barriers), as well as from its palatial constructions, accumulated since the XV century up to the times of I Marquis of Tarifa in the XVI century. The castle preserved its military function for a for a millenium. In 1989 it was placed in civil hands, beginning with the restoration and archeological work that has made it known to us.

We really enjoyed our trip to this fortress. We did a self-paced tour and spent the time where we were the most interested. The fortress had many well preserved areas that showed historic aspects and had cut-aways to show more details. There were amazing views of the old city and northern Morocco. We spent a little more than two hours here, but could have stayed longer if we read through all the information presented.

Opening times are sometimes a little bit tedious…. Would habe loved to see the interior but they close very soon.
It makes quite a spectacular view from the outside and has a vast history covered.
Build by musuluman conquerors, it stood for
Many hundred years in their dominion before cristian warriors took it. It then became a Spanish fortification and was used till last century. It is fully intact from the outside and documentation tells there is a lot of history to be seen in the interior. Next time I won’t miss the visit.
Together with the lovely medieval town of Tarifa it is one of the must visit places in south Spain.

Because it has gone through recent archeological study, there is a lot of history to see. The views from the ramparts were amazing; unfortunately, someone very important was visiting that day and we were unable to visit the castle church. It was definitely worth our time and we enjoyed both the restored sections and the ruins.

Near Old town is the Castle, Castillo de Guzman el Bueno y Centro de Interpretacion. Entrance fee was 4 Euros each. Decent views and probably worth an hour of your time. If short on time, I might do other things first.

We visited tarifa and took a walk to the Guzman castle and very nearly didn't go in...
We had already seen a couple of historical Spanish buildings by this point in our trip and weren't really sure we wanted to see another.

But the price on the door was very low and if nothing else it looked like we would get a good view from the tower and ramparts.

We were very pleasantly surprised with the castle overall. Plenty of very informative plaques covering the history of the castle plus the wider history of tarifa and its importance in spain's history

And we did get some fantastic views from the top too!

This is a good place to stroll up to from old tsarina. You get great views of Tarifa and beyond and also over the busy harbour with the ferries to Morocco. the authorities could make more of its history.

The exposition is quite poor, I'd wanted to see more archeological artifacts, connected with the story of the castle, but I found some info stands instead, which was not so interesting for me.
