One of the most prominent plazas is the Plaza del Populo, considered the most beautiful plaza in the city. It is also called Leones Square because it has a central fountain surrounded by lion statues. The Fountain of the Lions was brought from the nearby Roman city of Castulo. There is a sculpture of a woman in the middle of the fountain that represents Imilce, the Iberian wife of Hannibal. There is also the Villalar Arch, which as constructed to remember the victory of Carlos V against the Comuneros in the Battle of Villalar in 1521. The Jaen Gate was constructed in 1526 to honor the visit of Carlos V. Beside the square is the Casa del Populo, a building done in the Plateresque style that is now used as the Tourism Office. This building was constructed between 1535 and 1540. Beside this building is the old slaughterhouse from the 16th century, with its large imperial coat of arms. This building is now used to house the archives of the city and has a museum.

Of course, this popular square is not Piazza del popolo, just as Baeza is not Rome. However, the size of the square corresponds to the size of the people. Despite its modest size, the square is quite interesting in its history and architecture. If you enter the square from the West, you do so via Puerta de Jaen. It was originally the city gate of the Muslim Bayyasa, but the Royal authorities carried out reconstruction after the Reconquista to erase the memory of the Arab heritage. In addition to the gate, the Arco de Villalar was added in 1526 to commemorate the suppression of a revolt in Castile that threatened the power of king Carlos I, better known as Carlos V, Holy Roman Emperor. Carlos I is invisibly present in the square in the form of his shield on the facade of Antigua Carnicería,located on the opposite side. The butcher shop used to be in this building, but now it's a courthouse. Casa del Pópulo is located in the southern side of the square. This Plateresco-style building served as a venue for civil hearings, which justified her name. Now there is a tourist office here. The Lion fountain is the dominant feature of the square. Four lions guard an ancient female statue. It depicts the Iberian Princess Imilce, who according to legend became the wife of the famous commander of antiquity Hannibal.

Problaby the most intersting square in town, breathing a lot of history.
The plaza is also called Plaza de los Leones, referring to the fountain with this name on the square.
Most of the buildings around the square date back to the renaissance area in the 16th century, such as the House of the People or Civil High Court and Public Clerks' Offices, the Old Butchers' Shops, the Jaén Gate and the Villalar Arch.
Definitely worth a visit.

Baeza is a marvelous world heritage site and this is the entrance to the old area, there are two doors and a nice fountain in the center of the square. Highly recommended to do a tour of baeza in English or Spanish.

Beautiful old square dating back to the mid 1500s, currently undergoing roadworks just below the double gated archway.
In amazing condition considering its age and close to the numerous other churches, squares etc all in very close proximity to each other and all dating back to the same era.
Very easy to find as all these places of interest are well signposted. Starting here we walked round of all the main sites in under an hour...so all very close...intending to have a more in-depth look later in the day.

Plaza del Populo, as well as Plaza de Santa Maria, is another Baeza square, which is one of the oldest and was one of the most important in the town at Middle Ages. This square is also known as Plaza de Los Leones. There are some objects of interest in this Plaza. The square is surrounded by buildings of Antigua Carniceria, Casa del Populo (there is Office of Tourism), Puerta de Jaen and the Arch of Villalar. There is also the Roman (!) fountain with the statue of Iberian princess in the center of the square.

This plaza is yet another Renaissance-era treasure in the historic centre of Baeza. The city is worth visiting even as a day trip from Jaen or Cordoba. It lacks the crowds of those cities and yet offers much greater architectural history.

Baeza is a beautiful old town. Center is not very big and you can walk everywhere for 1 - 1 1/2 hour. Plaza is very nice with old fountain.

We visited this Plaza with the fountain with the lions twice. Once at night when the walls are with lights and it looks mysterious place. Once again in the morning to see better the scultures of the fountain and the special walls.
