A visit to the Irish Workhouse Center was recommended by friends, which was a good thing as we would otherwise have missed this place on our recent trip to Ireland. We vIsited on a cold, wet day which added to the sadness of this place. In a simple way the center tells the story that so many in Ireland would... More

Came upon this by chance, so glad we did. Amazing knowledge and information of our wonderful guide was worth the small admission fee itself, and the fact that its a charity and not for profit was even better. Would rccomend it to anyone.

--Reason for visit We visited the workhouse on the way back to the north after a weekend in Galway during August 16. My girlfriend , who is studying to become a primary teacher, discovered the workhouse during internet searches and as the famine is included in the primary syllabus in NI, decided it was well worth a visit. --Abstract I'll... To begin with, the staff opened up especially and made nothing of it which I'm not sure too many would do. I came here last year on my own and returned with friends and the guides remembered me and was very welcoming. The story is a difficult and harrowing one at times but was told with care. So much rhymes... More

Not sure if a tour guide is always there (in winter), but worth ringing ahead to enquire. We did, and David was our tour guide..... he brought the history to life ... absolutely brilliant. This workhouse brings home the stark reality of The Great Hunger ...... very sobering. There was no other visitors when we were there, David and (lovely... More

We stumbled upon the Workhouse by accident while driving through Portumna on the way back to Dublin. This was an unforgettable experience and I'm very happy that we took the time to learn about what was, I remembered, my grandmother's biggest fear..."Ending up in the Workhouse"! Our knowledgable guide brought to life the struggle of vulnerable and impoverished people living... More

I would definitely recommend a visit to the workhouse centre in Portumna for those that live in Ireland and looking for something to do or for any tourists wanting to get a feel for what life was like for Irish people around the time of the famine. The staff were extremely welcoming, full of historical facts and obviously history enthusiasts.The... More
