Welcome to Kálfholt! Kálfholt is a family run horse breeding farm located on the eastern banks of the Þórsá river between the towns of Selfoss and Hella in South Iceland. Today the farm boasts about 100 horses, several of which have gone on to become national champions in many competitions around the country, such as Landsmót 1998.Besides the breeding and training aspects of the farm, Kálfholt also offers year-round riding tours, ranging from child friendly 1 hour tours to week-long tours for experienced riders. See our riding tour page for details. The breeding and training is carried out by the whole family and plays a large role in the daily activities of Kálfholt. Guests will have a tour of the stables and get to meet some of the horses.

Weather can be unpredictable in Iceland and when our original plans got cancelled due to weather we were hoping to fit in one last Icelandic activity to end our trip!Kalfholt came through!! They were super flexible and accommodating. The horses were so friendly and easy to ride. There is nothing like walking through the snow on the most gentle horse... More

Went horse back riding with my husband and kids (kids' age 10 and 12). None of us had any experience at all so we were all kind of excited about it. Nothing to be nervous about at all. I forgot the name of the guy who took us on a beginners ride (just the four of us) but he was... More

We chose this barn because of its proximity to our rental and smaller size. We were not disappointed! The setting is beautiful and family lovely. Myself (a beginner) and my 10yr old daughter (an experienced rider) took a 1hr ride. We both had a great time. We rode through their fields and down to the river. We saw the stallions,... More

The hospitality of this family owned stable makes it highly recommendable! We are not very experienced horse riders, and even so they definitely made the 2 hour tour a good experience. The stable is placed in a beautiful area. They also offer accommodation in nice rooms.

Family of novices arrived to ride at Kalfholt Riding Day Tours. The kids are seven and nine, and they each were able to ride their own horses. We started with a few laps of the riding ring in the barn, then out for a tour around their lovely property. We walked most of the way with a couple of short... More

This friendly working farm, run by Steingrimur and his lovely family, offers all sorts of riding from week long treks to 2-3 hours of "riding for all". Much as we would love to think we could handle six days, actually, we're just beginners so the riding for all it was. We turned up on an afternoon of spectacular rain, and... More

My husband and I went on the "Ride For All" and had a wonderful afternoon. The horses were easygoing, and the location was breathtaking. We loved getting to experience the unique tolt gait of the Icelandic horses, and it felt very special to have a local family open up their farm to us. One of the highlights of the day... More

We took the Ride for all -tour as one of us was a more experienced rider and two were beginners. Loved it! We rode in beautiful scenery in a group of only six people with two members of staff. The horses were calm, riding speed was comfortable for everyone and the staff took good care of us and spoke English... More

This was one of the absolute highlights of our tour on Iceland! The hosts were wonderful, the horses marvelous and the tølt absolutely lovely. We were 3 families travelling Iceland together with teen aged boys and a smaller child. No one of us had any previous riding experience so we went for the "Ride for All", with basic instructions inside... More

The owners are a lovely couple who could not have done a better job catering to our group of very mixed ability riders, ranging from rank beginner (has been on a horse 1 time prior) to former professional. We were outfitted in rain-proof gear (which ultimately proved unnecessary) and well-mounted on safe, well-trained horses. Prior to setting out into the... More
