What a magical place! I visited in the summer and it was even better than anticipated. There is a parking area, toilets at the start, and then you can wander around and explore at your leisure. As you walk (about 20 minutes to the end...More

Definitely worth seeking this place out. It was beyond beautiful. It was a little muddy and there was a blind curve on a hill but then you hike about 100 meters and it's all there.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon is one of those places that you will never regret while visiting Iceland. It is a magical space in a very isolated area in southern Iceland, that deserves a visit. I was lucky to be on my own. There was hardly anyone when...More

Quite an adventure just heading up the hill in knee deep high snow! It was March and not as busy, with icy paths and snow on the ground the entire time. It looked incredible, until you're at the edge and the views are just insane....More

Absolutely stunning canyon. And best of all it was great to hike here since there were hardly any tourists, unlike the beaches and waterfalls of the south region. It was a nice stop on our drive from Vik to Jökulsárlón Lagoon.

Went on a rainy day, and wasn't too bad to hike up. There are a number of lookout spots along the way, so you can choose how far you want to go. I'd suggest trying to go to the end because the views down the...More

I read that these date more than 2million years .... this country has everything in amazing natural sights! The turnoff is about 5km from Kirkjubaejarklaustur (if you're driving from Vik), there is a gravel road (about 2-2.5km long), but obviously taking it slow will get...More

I visited in early May on a cloudy/drizzly day and it was still amazing. I imagine in the summer it must be even better. I was concerned about driving to get here, but it really was not bad at all. I drove a Ford Fiesta,...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Two questions. 1) How far is the drive from Route 1 (Main Road) to car park? Easy to find? Any signage in advance? 2) How far is the walk from the car park to the canyon? Easy walk going upwards? Is it possible to walk a bit to see the canyon and take some photos? Or will I only get to see the canyon view after 1 hour of serious hiking? I understand it's best to walk around to take in the view from different angles, but will be travelling with mobile senior parents (in their 70s), so I want to know that I can adjust things if they feel tired that day.

Not far from Route 1 - but when we went few part of the stretch is highly bumpy. Easy walk and the place is gorgeous - definitely worth the trip.

What are the roads/weather like in this area? We will be traveling down Highway 1 from Selfoss through Vik up to this area in mid March. We rented a 4x4 Suzuki. Any help on what the weather and roads could be like during middle of March would be very helpful. Thanks!

I'm with the others on this one. The road will be bumpy but can be handled with care - and it's not that far off the main road. I've seen forest tracks in Scotland that were far more harmful to tyres than this will be... More
How long dos it take to hike the canyon? Is it worth it to go all the way in and back ? Any recommended trails?

20 minutes and there is really only one trail, but it is spectacular.
