- LisaMNUSASaint Paul, Minnesota1,122 contributionsA beautiful sightA short walk led us to the crater lake. The lake was tranquil. Despite the wind that day, we walked along the path to view the lake from different angles. At the end of the path, we discovered another smaller crater lake.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2024

- Maria Solange OFarroupilha, RS31,214 contributionsGreat crater!Iceland is a country with many natural beauties and the Viti Crater is one of them. This huge crater arose from a volcanic eruption and within it formed a lake with turquoise blue water. Access is easy from the parking lot and has free entrance. Wear clothes and shoes suitable for walking and enjoy the beautiful look.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 October 2024
- Tom&NikkiTravelLondon, United Kingdom1,900 contributionsA Wonderful Crater with a mesmerising turquoise lake!On our northern leg of our ring road trip we opted to make the small detour off the main road to drive up to the Viti crater. Despite it only being a 10 minute detour it feels like you are a thousand miles away when you arrive. Having navigated through the Krafla Power Plant and past the hot spring shower, driving up the mountain pass the Viti crater almost creeps up on you. Pulling into the car park, it is only a few steps between the car and the main viewing platform of Viti Crater. On a good weather day you can opt to walk around the crater rim for full panoramic views of all the angles - it is surprising just how large the crater is! The deep turquoise colour of the lake in the crater is mesmerising, to see a natural wonder like that is a breathtaking experience and a prime example of just how impactful the nature in Iceland is!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2024

The blue of the water in the crater is stunning against the red brown soil. I walked up from the car park and enjoyed the chance to stretch my legs. It is worth a look, but it doesn't take long to walk up if you are fit and there is not really anything else to do. There had been so light rain on the day I was there and it was very muddy. Worth a brief stop if in the area.

Similar kind of thing to the Kerid Crater on the Golden Circle, which, if you have already seen that, you probably could skip here. That said, this is free (unlike Kerid). You can hike a quarter of the way round the crater off to the right of the car park if you like. I didn’t bother & was happy with the view from the car park. This crater lake was created during the Myvatn fires of 1724-29.

The crater lake is definitely very nice with its tourquise water but somehow, if a nature attraction is too easy to visit, it loses its magic for me. The parking lot is really only several steps from Víti. What attracted my attention much more, was a view on Krafla geothermal power plant nearby which was very interesting for me.

It’s quite a drive up to this feature through some amazing and extraordinary landscapes, but when you arrive there’s not much to do here other than peer into the turquoise water below, and take a short stroll along a section of the crater rim. Not even any information boards. The Kerid Crater (on the Golden Circle) is much more interesting with amazing coloured rocks, and you can walk into the bottom.

We agreed to a 5 min stop between visiting Leirhnjukur and the Myvatn baths as that is all the time we had. And it turned out that was all the time we needed to see a small blue crater lake. Its a nice colour but it isn't worth a special trip.

Definitely a must stop when heading to Myvatn. This crater is beautiful, most of the year surroundings are already covered in snow and it looks amazing. At the same time you can admire the geothermal powerplant that is right underneath the hill.

I'll confess... this was on the list of things to do. It was snowing. A lot. Again. We pulled up, thinking we were in the parking lot, bundled up, and headed out for the short walk to the crater. As it turns out, we weren't in the parking lot, the road was closed, and we had a trek to make. Off we went up the hill. After trudging for what seemed a very long time, we turned around and realized we hadn't come very far. We exchanged knowing looks. Turned around and went back to the car. Might be better in summer (I think they have a summer??)

We thought this was a little under-whelming. The blue lake in the center is pretty, but it wasn't as great as I expected. If you have extra time, it's worth a stop and a climb up. The valley is also interesting with the steam pipes and power plant.

From the SS1, turn onto the SS863 and follow it to the end. From the car park
(free) located at the foot of the crater, you can easily climb to the top, to admire the landscape and the beautiful blue lake that fills the crater. The diameter of the crater is around 300 meters and is the result of the 1724 eruption.

Nice crater, you can walk around it and even hike on top of it.There is a hiking path around the summit for which you need approx. 15 minutes. Beautiful crater lake in emerald color, just within 10 minutes drive from Myvatn. From the summit you can admire the vast volcano area and the nearby geothermal power plant. The drive here is a scenic drive on paved roads over craters and geothermal area. Easily accessible by car . The parking is close to the crater. Nice place and worth seeing.

You can NOT go down to the water, it´s illegal to go of the path in Myvatn. Bathing is in the other Viti crater at Askja, 100 miles south of this crater....

Is this a place where my husband and I can take a rental car? Do we need an SUV? We are seasoned drivers and can handle a vehicle decently in adverse conditions but I was wondering if we were allowed to go there on our own or do we have to take a tour?

Only one question, which viti crater? There are more there s mor then one...
If you mean next to Askja? This is unpaved badly road, for at least 4 hours trough 2 small rivers one way, 4wd needed!
