There are 2 areas to walk to at this falls, and both are amazing. It is a bit of a walk to get to either one, so aim to spend 2-3hours in this area. There are some free restrooms in the parking lot. Then it is a bit of a gravel track to the falls. We were here during Mid-Sept,... More

We tried getting there and the 3 roads were closed, with an AWD. The staff of our hotel told us that one of the guests had to pay the rescue fee since their 4x4 didn't make it. So unless you have a Super Jeep it was not possible still.

Did not actually manage to see the waterfall as the road was closed - late March. Was actually hoping to catch it as it is from the opening scene of the movie, Prometheus. It is Europe's most powerful waterfall. There is an eastbound and westbound way, from readings, the westbound way is paved (whereas the east is not) however this... More

Dettifoss is a little out-of-the-way, but worth it. The Winter scenery made it especially beautiful. Weather changed rapidly from clear sky to snowing to hailing. View are fantastic. Worth the drive.

We went mid march and the drive...although icy wasn't too bad. The waterfall is about 1000m from the Parking lot, although it seemed a little longer. Some of the trails were closed off but we were still able to enjoy the view from the metal landings. There's also Sefloss on the other side that you should see too.

In a country of thousands of waterfalls, this is one of the best. It is absolutely worth the drive to get to it. I only wish we had more time to go to both sides as I would have like a little better view from our side. Maybe the people we say carrying drones at other scenic areas were the... More

I chose to travel to Dettifoss via 864 on the East side. By October this road was full of copious potholes but passable with no problems. The views from this side require a walk down and then over to the waterfall but it is well worth the walk. The tour buses don't come here so there will probably be less... More

Another humongous waterfall that is very impressive. You can expect spending 1 to 2 hours here. The west side is the one with the paved road, parking, toilets and all the infrastructure. While you are there, please search for my sunglasses, I forgot them at the parking lot. The east side is less modern but you can get very (dangerously)... More

This is the most stunning waterfall we have ever seen. It is easily accessible from the road, between Akureyre and Lake Myvatn.

If anybody has time, you should go both sides to view this spectacle. Even the canyon without waterfall is beautiful.
