We walked up after seeing the cathedral which is only a stone's throw away.

It's a nice walk up and when at the top you have some nice views of the city below.

Can imagine it would be lovely in summer for picnics etc.

Worth going up and taking a few pics :)

Linnamäki Castle Hill is situated next to Porvoo Old Town (only some hundred meters) and it is one of Finland's best-preserved castle hills. However, you don't see any castle here, only old moats.

A wooden wall may have been built at the top of these moats. Defenders and attackers shot crossbow bolts here and some bolts have been discovered on the hill.

In medieval times the castle on this hill dominated the River Porvoonjoki. The first wooden castle was probably built in the late 13th century. During the 14th century Linnamäki Castle Hill was modernized. Moats were fortified and a wooden bailiff's castle was built on the hilltop. This castle was probably demolished and abandoned around the year 1400.

During the Great Northern War (around 1713) Russians had a gun post on the top of Linnamäki Castle Hill. Battles raged on both sides of the River Porvoonjoki.

Besides history I also loved the beautiful view from the hill. You can see the Cathedral of Porvoo and the River Porvoonjoki from here. Our teens loved running and "fighting" here.

Remember to visit the adjacent Maari Park, too. There was an ancient harbor there. People lived here as early as in the Iron Age. Archaeologists have found old graves here. People were laid to rest with their weapons or jewelleries. All this is very intriguing!

If you like overviews of historic and charming places, it is recommended that you take the short hike up the cobble stone streets to Castle Hill. On Castle Hill is the Lutheran cathedral.

Saw this on the map & thought it sounded cool. Was definitely disappointed as there was nothing at all to see. Spent 40 minutes walking to & from a "cemetary" that several city signs had pointed to, and it was nothing more than an indistinguishable hill with nothing at all on it. Couldn't even find it without combing around because the signs stopped. Honestly felt like I got catfished.
Left feeling annoyed. Wasn't worth getting eaten by bugs for.

If you're looking for a simple walk in the woods, go for it, otherwise you'll be disappointed.

The climb isn't too hard although not wheelchair or pushchair friendly. The views are spectacular and the walk is lovely.

Very beautiful, so peaceful and such a beautiful walk from the tourist centre. It is really beautiful to sit a bit and enjoy the magnificent views over the river and little town.

This site is marked on some of the signposts as the Prehistoric Fort and sometimes as the Castle Hill. Neither name seems particularly accurate. The hill is rather the former site of a wooden fortress. Today all that remains of the fortress are the former moats which were carved out around it, and which are now crossed by wooden footbridges. However, this site is set in a patch of pine forest which is enjoyable to explore. Local joggers come up here sometimes but you will probably have it mostly to yourself. We enjoyed the natural surroundings and the solitude.

Nothing is left of the castle itself except for the shape of the site. It is located only a couple of hundred meters away from the old town and makes for a nice little walk among the trees.

The castle hill is an ancient monument. Locals know it as Linnamäki so if you are asking for directions. USe Linnamäki insted. Took me a few moments to realise what attraction Castle hill is =) The are consist of Iso Linnamäki (Great Castle Hill) which is the site of one of the biggest ancient fortresses in Finland and Pikku Linnamäki (Lesser Castle Hill) where you can find an Iron Age burial site discovered in 1965. It is an interesting culutural site worth a visit. On May day (1st of May) Castle Hill is filled with labor day celebrators who enjoy picnics and games. In wintertime a slope just before castle hill turns into a toboggan slide for locals, from young to old.

Below the Linnamäki hills is Maari Park, a popular recreational area in the summer among locals for walks and picnics.
