Can’t understand why this says this place meets animal guidelines, and cannot understand why this place has any good reviews. Large elephant was chained up and only swaying back and forward constantly, couldn’t move even an inch further. The elephant looked so sad it made me cry. Animals do not deserve to be treated like this ever, it’s disgusting.

This zoo should be called an exotic animal prison instead. There is a clear disregard for animal husbandry and a complete lack of conservation education. I wish I hadnt gone and I employ you not to go. The animals enclosures are pathetically small and covered in feces. There's no attempt to create natural environments for the animals; further thers no attempt to even have clean and proper enclosures. The animals are in poor health and terrible conditions. If you have a geart at all then dont go!!!

The elephant with chains around his arm reminded us of Dumbo movie and his sad face made us cry as children. Lynx were enclosed in a gloomy small place and were moving around keeping the same circle along the perimeter. They seemed to be gone mad. The same for birds, except for the bigger ones which missed also the space to open their beautiful wings. Deers were pushed to the corners of their jails, giving the impression of being scared by visitors. The whole structure was dirty and crumbling.

I had a beautiful view of the zoo from my hostel breakfast area so of course I had to go to the zoo! $500 rupees for foreigners and 60 rupees for locals. It was a pleasant walk, not too crowded. lots of kids and families looking at animals.

This zoo is just utterly depressing. I payed 500 Rupees to see animals pacing back and fourth and sitting alone in tiny enclosures.
On the information boards the small cages were nothing what their natural habitat is meant to be. "Usually enjoys wet, marsh areas" whilst this poor animal was in a dry dirt cage with no water and dead sticks scattered everywhere.
I'm glad I didn't get an elephant ride, because this poor thing was shackled up AMD swaying back and forth and the keeper would occasionally hit it with a stick.
There was no water for the animals, no food other than dead leaves and no maintenance in any enclosures as most of them were overgrown.
If you want to see guinea pigs bred from incest, white mice and goldfish, his is the place to be. Honestly save your money and go to Chitwan

Good zoo ,have lake with activities like boating ,with many coffee shop around . We spend good time even though It's painful to see the animals in cage ,but it's the only chance to see
animals are housed within enclosures, cared for, displayed to the public, and in some cases bred
Modern zoos also aim to help teach visitors the importance on animal conservation, often through letting visitors witness the animals firsthand. Some critics and the majority of animal rights activists say that zoos, no matter what their intentions are, or how noble they are, are immoral and serve as nothing but to fulfill human leisure at the expense of the animals (which is an opinion that has spread over the years). However, zoo advocates argue that their efforts make a difference in wildlife conservation and education.
Many zoos work to improve their animal enclosures and make it fit the animals' needs, although constraints such as size and expense make it difficult to create ideal captive environments for many species.
Animals in zoos often exhibit behaviors that are abnormal in their frequency, intensity, or would not normally be part of their behavioural repertoire. These are usually indicative of stress. For example, elephants sometimes perform head-bobbing, bears sometimes pace repeatedly around the limits of their enclosure, wild cats sometimes groom themselves obsessively, and birds pluck out their own feathers. Some critics of zoos claim that the animals are always under physical and mental stress, regardless of the quality of care towards the animals.

With this zoo being the only one in Nepal I had good expectations of it. However, with my GCSE, A-level and Bachelor's degree knowledge in Biology I was saddened to see most of the animal enclosures. I saw turtles in enclosures with no water, a bird with a broken leg, jackalts in a concrete enclosure, and almost none of the enclosures we're suited to the wild habitat of the animal- for example the majority of the bird enclosures were filled with weeds. I witnessed a group of people teasing and aggravating the leopards, with no keepers present throughout our visit to keep and eye on animal health or incidents with visitors. The fishing lake is over-grown with algae, which is known to shade and kill submerged plants, which then decompose and use up the oxygen in the water which the fish and other organisms need. The grounds were well-kept, and there we're a couple of rides and a park for children. Entry price was good value (500 rupees for foreigners) Overall, I think the enclosures require attention for the welfare of the animals, but I was pleased to see an animal hospital and I would probably not go again accept to raise money to improve animal welfare.
