You have to register at the information center of the park. The staff was really helpful and friendly. Because I was not feeling very well we could not take the footprint hike. We took the information trail instead. It was quite a climb up hill. It was okay, but I would not recommend it per se. I’m sure the other trails would have been amazing.

I think they have more than 10 specific tracking route herewith different level of hardness, length and types. You can choose suitable one and rent facilities from manaemt office.

Sadly it took a 30 mins to find the very minor sign and track to the 'park' entrance where no information is seen. To the tourist bureau... 'go to forest office'. 12.45 sign 'back at 14.15. Happily a chap appeared and I told him I wanted a short walk maybe part of the Footprint Trail 13k... what is the trail marking? He pulled out two sheets of forms for me to fill in for a permit. To walk in a premier attraction forest for a couple of hours? I drove from half way up the Georgian Militar H to get here.
Drove instead thru Bakuriani towards Akhalkalaki sheep and potholed dirt road ... incredible autumn ash colours, but had passport and car detained for check by Police at summit. I guess free movement is not encouraged.

the park is very large and there is different tracks (map available at the ticket office for 5GL)
go for the 4h track so you can reach a spot with a view on Borjomy
the easy and short track is 1h to 1h30 but nothing very interesting
AND PLEASE : keep your garbage with you. insane visitor left behind plastic bottles, beer cans, picnic reliefs...
visitors should be educated prior to access the park

The national park office has details of waymarked trails of various lengths up to several days. The forests and valleys are uncommonly well protected and maintained. it is a complete escape from the bustle of the town centre.

You need to get a permit before accessing the park, which is easy (shame that the female member of staff is highly untrained and lacks any politeness or customer skills). This attraction offers a range of amazingly very well marked trails, great views and peaceful locations. Good for a few hours escapades or longer trips, including camping option. A must see!

There are probably many paths and places to go, but we've followed green line and the trip has an amazing view to whole Borjomi. It is 2 hours by walk and not so hard, but definitely worth it!!

This was our first time to Georgia and we were not sure what to expect. This park is super organized, interesting hikes, well marked routes and more than anything rewarding scenery. Plan few days to explore different paths.

Our day started from Kazbegi and we spent some time in Gaduari ski resort to catch some action of paragliding and later visited Uplistsikhe cave complex in the after noon. By evening we reached Borjomi National park. It was cold and breezy and with less people. We tried the natural sulfurous fountain water. It was nice to walk around and easily a day trip can be planned with so many walking trails available for varying difficulties. Definitely good walking shoe is recommended.
Definitely will visit again.

For hiking trips, day trips as well as multi-day trips, this region offers one of the best experiences in Georgia. There are multiple beautiful, marked, and well maintained trails, most of them starting in Borjomi. Along the way, you will find shelters and sources of water. You cannot compare it to national parks in the U.S., but compared to other regions in Georgia, this is definitely the most developed national park.
You should definitely start at the visitor center, as they can provide you with otherwise hard to get maps, useful information and the obligatory permit. There are multiple taxis waiting in front of the visitor center, which can take you to the trailheads. Situated in the Lesser Caucasus, this region is a lot less crowded than Swanetia for example. On our three days of hiking in May, we met a total of five people. The shelter being a bit dirty until we cleaned up was really the only downside.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for links to the footprint walking trail but can’t seem to find these online. Are these only available at the visitor centre? Grateful if anyone can shed any light!

Hi, I am planning to follow the St Andrews Trek in September. Do the huts provide meals or is it necessary to bring our own food? Is there also enough accommodation on the trail. Thanks, Phil

The trail starts at Atskuri guard station (1,000 m above sea level) and goes through the Amarati tourist shelter, Sametskhvario guard and Sakhvlari tourist shelter and ends at Marelisi guard station or vice versa.
Atskuri guard station is 27 km away from the National Park Visitor Center.
The length of the trail is 54 km. There are mixed coniferous, alpine and subalpine meadows and Colchic broad-leaved forests. The first section of the trail goes along a river valley followed by a narrow path up to mountain slopes. After 3 hours of hiking, the visitor will see the first panoramic scenery; The second half of the day follows the mountain slopes with beautiful panoramic views of the Lesser Caucasus.
After an overnight in theAmarati tourist shelter (1,900 m above sea level) the second-day route goes along subalpine and alpine meadows up to the highest peak of Sametskhvareo Mountain (2,642 m), afterwards it goes down 19 km. You will go through Mountain Iron Cross, where there was erected an iron cross according to legend. The third day hiking ends at Sakhvlari tourist shelter (1,025 m above sea level). The last day route follows the river valley and is the easiest one.
It is possible to add one overnight in Kvazvinevi ranger shelter or tents/
#2 St. Andrew trail ends at the Marelisi guard station.
Tentative schedule:
Day 1: Atskuri guard station – Amarati tourist shelter 16 km. on average 6-7 hr., overnight in tourist shelter or tents
Day 2: Amarati tourist shelter – Sametskhvario guard shelter 9 km. on average 4-5 hr., overnight in tourist shelter or tents (with two beds)
Day 3: Sametskhvario guard shelter – Sakhvlari tourist shelter 19 km. On average 7 hr., overnight in tourist shelter or tents
Day 4: Sakhvlari tourist shelter – Marelisi guard shelter 10 km. on average 4-5 hr.
I have not done this and hence cannot give you an accurate answer to your question. It seems that you need not carry food. However, best is to check with the Tourist office - for food and whether they are open in November.

I have at most one day to invest in the park. What should I do? What is the difficulty level (we are 67 years old)? What is recommended?
Thanks
Aharon
