Nice area around lake compared to Yuma. Good places to fish, not crowded during the middle of the week when I was there. I caught only 1 bass but was a good day just being out there fishing. A good place to go and get away for a day or week as they have dry camping on the lake or close to it.

Mittry Lake is an awesome place to camp. We were able to get a spot to camp right at the base of a jetty. There were a lot of birds to watch and lovely sunrises and sunsets. The fishing must be good because a lot of people bring their boats here and go fishing.

You may be very surprised to know that Yuma has a very nice lake with bass fishing galore. It is located on the slopes of mountains that still have a lot of gold if you like to look for that sort of thing. In the winter months many snowbirds live near the lake and participate in organized activities.

This lake area appears to have been developed to allow access to the water for fishing and light boating. Rock jetties, now well overgrown were created into the lake to allow access to deeper water for those without a boat or kayak/canoe. The attraction called Betty's Kitchen on the maps is under reconstruction (after a fire?) so is inaccessible and in other places they are cutting back the tall grasses at the lake edge to allow better lake access. There are many places to put in a canoe or pontoon boat but be warned the sides of the jetties are steep and I had a difficult time getting ashore from my pontoon boat. I advise anyone to make sure they find a proper ramp to get in and out unless they want an early bath. Follow the gravel road around the lake and you will come to a picnic area with a handicap accessible wooden dock for fishing and a concrete launch ramp. I fished for several hours for bass but had no success, the locals told me the water has to warm up a lot more before the fishing improves (that was in March). The variety of birds is amazing, lots to look at, and the produce fields on the way to the lake from Yuma are also very interesting.

Over a year ago this wildlife area was partly destroyed because of a fire. It took them weeks to put the fire out.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how much the vegetation has bounced back.

I am not sure what people do on the big lake. I saw some pretty powerful motor boats being unloaded - that's not my idea of enjoying nature.

Also I saw a small lake with coots and a white heron and an egret an a pelican! I had never seen a pelican here before,
I tried to take some pictures (from a far distance, did not want to disturb the birds).
They turned out so-so. But it felt wonderful to just be able to watch those birds.

Whenever I am in Yuma I try and drive to Mittry Lake.
It's a small wildlife area but it's precious.

I moved to Yuma Arizona from the California coast about a year ago and was bummed because there's been no place to take my dog for a swim. At least not until I found Lake Mittry! I was pleasantly surprised to see the beautiful lake. There are plenty of little private spots where you can park your car by the water and relax outside your car. Not a ton of restrictions. Do what you want. Totally relaxing and stress free! Lots of trees and shade too. You don't find that much in the middle of the desert. There is a boat ramp, covered picnic tables and free overnight camping. Very clean place. Would be great for hiking or mountain biking (when the temperature cools down usually from October to May). My dog was in his glory when he saw all the water and got in to fetch his ball! I am so happy to have found this place and will be going back soon!

Our outing to Mittry lake was enjoyed by about 25 of us where we gathered to have a wiener roast. The area we chose was sheltered from the wind so it was warm and comfortable to be out in this area.

We drove through the Mittry Lake Wildlife Area after leaving Yuma and on our way to Quartzsite. It was a long drive along the lake and on to a main road but very pleasant. It you have looked online and think this might be a place to camp while visiting the Yuma area, you would probably want to be closer since it is not an easy commute to do things in or near town. If you are just looking for solitude and maybe some fishing or kayaking, this would be the place! There is no charge for camping but, of course, no amenities. Also, the camping is mostly along the road and not a huge number of spots. We plan to go back and camp for a couple of days sometime.

A nice place to launch a boat for some fishing or just sight seeing along the river. Or, take a ride on a dirt bike on some of the easy roads and trails. Or, just park you RV and enjoy the quiet nature of the area. The area is large enough to have a variety of parking places, with different vegetation. From rocky desert to water and trees. Not real easy to find without directions from someone local. but that information is easy to get. I'll go there again, it's a good place to relax.
