The movie shares a lot of history about first people encounters and adventures in the Grand Canyon. There’s a great little cafe with delicious ice cream and a nice gift shop as well. Don’t skip it!

I have not been here for 20+ years. It was still great. I believe it is the same movie I watched back then. The Theater and gift shop were clean. The prices were right. It was a bummer that the projection was not digital as the quality of the image could have been better like at other Imax. Great time for the entire family.

This trick worked for me ... Do a (facebook) LIKE for the imax - and then they give you a facebook page with 30% off imax adult and/or kids tickets. Visa/MC only - no amex.

You see the words Grand Canyon and Imax together and think that you are about to watch a breathtaking movie about one of nature's wonders, but think again, it happens to turn out a rather disappointing experience. The movie has some interesting information about the native americans that once inhabitted this area, and about the early explorers, such as the spanish and brave people from the 1800s, but image quality is subpar and the sound mutes multiple times. It is a 35 minute long movie that costs 12 dollars, not bad, but if you have little time to spare, skip this movie.

We visited Grand Canyon in April 2008. We debated about seeing this movie and as we are not serious hikers, hoped that there would be scenes from inside the canyon that we would otherwise never see.
The cinematography was excellent! There are indeed many scenes that seem as if you are in a raft right on the river at the bottom of the canyon. Sadly, not enough for us! It would have been great to see another 10-20 minutes of these awesome scenes.
Some of the movie is a little "cheesy" . . . sort of glamorized history "light". We could have done with less time spent on the ancient history.
It certainly is no substitute for seeing the "real thing" just a couple of miles away. However, the scenes in the bottom of the canyon alone make it worth the admission price.

Saw the movie after seeing the canyon. It helped further my understanding of The Canyon's place in history. It helpeed me to further appreciate its appearance and se it from different perspectives.
It is wort the ten dollars & one hour after dark to see this film.

If you buy IMAX tickets online be aware that you view movie here. That was not clear to us and we drove to park thinking the theater was at the visitor center.

I'm so sorry you went right on passed us. I'll take a look and make sure that the directions are clear so that nobody else will miss it. I'm not sure how going past makes it a tourist trap however,

The movie is not worth the time or money, even though highly recommended by many! Skip the movie and head straight to the park to see it for yourself.

Way too expensive for 30 minutes, movie from the 1980's, run down theater and - most importantly - the story is only focusing on just the American discovery and leaving other topics (biology, geology, etc) totally out. Would have expected more from National Geographic, feels like a tourist trap and ripoff.

Thank you for your candid review of the movie. Although the movie format isn't for everyone we find that most people enjoy and appreciate the perspective. There are many ways the story could be told, from the vantage point of the Powell expedition adds excitement and entertainment.
Thank you again,
Marty

Just watched this IMAX presentation on the Grand Canyon in April 2015. Like many of the other reviewers it was not what I expected. Even my 10 year old said it was just okay. The main focus was on a small period of time during it's early discovery. Not much on its geological formation and only brief mention on other facts like scientific facts, wildlife etc. Quite shocking for a National Geographic project. The scenes were also not as spectacular as I was expecting which may be because it was filmed in 1984. I've seen many IMAX other presentations and they all were far better. Time to update this film, utilize new film technology and story lines and give the Grand Canyon the presentation it deserves.

I appreciate your candid appraisal of our film and we are glad that you stopped by. The film was produced a while back and to some that is an issue, the fact that we can no longer film the canyon as it was back then is the main issue with updating it. You are no longer allowed to flyover the canyon because of environmental, noise and other prohibitions. Permit issues with using the river can make filming difficult and a whole host of other hoops to jump thru.
The cinematography is stunning, the storyline gives a glimpse of the river then and the recreational uses we use it for now. Thanks again,
Marty

Is the movie at the visitors center the same as the i-max but only in 2-d?
Written 9 April 2017
Thanks for your great question. We have the one and only IMAX at the a National Geographic Visitors Center just outside the national park. "Grand Canyon; The Hidden Secrets" plays daily in 2d. The park visitor center has only a short film that is not the same film.
