- Robert HLynchburg, Virginia453 contributionsPre Fiesta Bowl funOur group of 6 ate lunch here while on the scenic Apache Trail drive. In Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl this turned out to be one of our favorite side excursions. The restaurant was a lot of fun with all the clever/unique photo ops. A back window with many species of birds and mining equipment was pretty entertaining, but we missed seeing the roadrunner. Restaurant was clean and decorated in a western style with everything covered in signed dollar bills from many patrons!! We left behind a Liberty University in the Fiesta bowl note on our dollar!! The meals were fantastic. Bbq sandwiches with prickly pear bbq sauce were great. Giant chili dog was amazing and the nachos app was enough for 6 with some Mexican heat. The prices were reasonable for a restaurant in this great location!! Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a great drive into the Arizona desert and finding entertainment and great food in one spot!!Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 January 2024
- ValerieB28Howell, New Jersey81 contributionsMust visit!Even if you don’t eat here, take the drive! The twist and turns and views are amazing! Just don’t do it at night. The food was surprisingly good for a tourist place. I had the pulled pork with prickly pear bbq sauce & potato salad…delicious! My husband had the chicken tacos which were stuffed! As for drinks, they claim to make them strong, the DI NOT! The margaritas were $17 and tasted like plain lemonade. Stick with the beer, they have many on tap from local breweries which were cold and delicious!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2024
- Kim RLangley, Canada133 contributionsThe Apache Trail drive to Tortilla Flat, AZ is quite the ride, & well worth the adventure!!The Apache Trail drive to Tortilla Flat, AZ is quite the ride, & well worth the adventure!! It reminded us of the Road to Hana in Maui although not as long, but lots of hairpin turns. We saw quite a few bikers who were enjoying the ride also. Fun little shops to buy that special souvenir or just to browse. We did not eat here as we were there mid day & the wait was too long. The parking is limited to plan on getting there early, we were quite saddened that the one handicapped parking stall was used by someone who clearly did not need to park there. Otherwise, we enjoyed our visit & recommend you to go for the ride!!!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024
- Statz2k10Los Angeles, California16 contributionsQuick Visit off 88This is off highway 88 which through Tonto National Forrest. It's about the further you can go because the road ends 9 miles later. I only went here because I wanted to check out the scenery off 88. Driving through the mountains & passing the lake offers some really beautiful scenery. Because of that it was worth going as far as Tortilla Flat. When arriving it was a lot of people & cars. The guys were cool who helped us find parking. Bigger the car more the problem you might have. I'm guessing some days are busier than others but it was busy for a beautiful Thursday in March. Didn't stay long because we didn't need to eat. If you got time to kill and just looking for something to do I think it's worth driving to but mostly to check out the scenery. Heads up on the drive there though. You will go through windy roads & will need to drive over 2 bridges that are just 1 lane which means you could find yourself waiting for oncoming traffic to stop. Fortunately for me I didn't have an issue but if you were to go at a bad time I could see where traffic backs up.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 March 2024

- JuroraPeterborough, Canada603 contributionsVisited here winter 2023.Unfortunately the day my hubby and I headed-out here, was a rainy day. There were plenty of mud-soaked puddles by the time we got out there. It is a nice, western themed attraction, but we only went into a few stores, and they were over-priced. As by hubby stated, they were tourist traps. The first shop I went into had a young girl there, who had modern music blaring, so the western atmosphere was lost, I know, she doesn't want to listen to western music, during her shift!, but still! The drive out and back is what made the trip...such beautiful scenery! Being my hubby's first trip to the desert (my 9th), he thoroughly enjoyed all the desert plants and the mountain, and valley views! It would have been much better of course, during a sunny day, and a better view of Canyon Lake...not as misty/foggy looking. We had hoped to do the loop tour, where we could have gone beyond the Flat, but we knew ahead of time, before leaving for our holiday, that the road was closed. We would have enjoyed our trip more. That will be our only time out to T.F., as it's not worthVisited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- Linda HErie, Illinois24 contributionsVery nice rideIt was not quite what I expected. I thought the saloon would be way more like an old time saloon. Tried the prickly pear gelato it was yummy. You will love the drive up. The mercantile store had stars on the bebit machine asking for tips. lol I didn’t know it was a thing to tip your store. They didn’t help me at all I pressed 0Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024

We had a great meal at this restaurant. The food is pub like style, but very tasty. Their homemade prickly pear lemonade was very refreshing and tasty. We enjoyed the saddles for bar stools and all of the old style saloon furnishings. A really cool thing is that the restaurant walls are almost completely covered in $1.00 bills. We really enjoyed our visit to this restaurant. It was a really cool experience.

Tortilla Flats is the last surviving stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail and is a bucket list must when visiting Mesa.
From Mesa it's an awesome drive along a beautiful scenic route through the dessert mountains on a long twisting road with switch backs, and breath taking desert scenery. Once there we visited the quirky & unique Superstition Saloon, with dollar bills & memorabilia covering the walls, and you sit on saddles at the bar. There's also a schoolhouse, post office, and small museum, a trading post/general store with a hanged dummy in front of it, and a shootout at the OK Corral. Just up the road is the beautiful Canyon Lake with Dolly the Rriverboat and mountain cliffs along it. There's great hiking & off road trails.

Superstition Saloon was a fun place to eat. We both had the BBQ & stringed onion burger. It was excellent! It was the perfect combination of barbecue sauce and onion on a toasted potato bun roll! The secret to getting a seat is to go right when it opens! We had no problem getting a place to park or immediate seating. By the time we were done with our meal, there was a line with an hour wait. Main Street got very crowded, very quickly so we were glad to wrap up our visit. The meal and ambiance is definitely worth the wait.

Stopped here for a quick visit after a the Dolly Steamboat Tour. For all the hype, don’t expect much, there isn’t much here. A restaurant, gift shop and a small schoolhouse/museum. Small but busy place and not much parking.
I’ll admit it was fun seeing $1 bills plastered all over the restaurant walls, and the women’s bathrooms had some fun art on the stalls. But the prickly pear gelato was a thumbs down. The taste was OK, but the texture was waxy, not creamy and had a funny aftertaste.
If you’re out this way, its OK for a quick stop. But, I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to visit.

A little town mostly made for tourists, but a lot of fun. You can get a bite to eat and some drinks, and take some great pictures. We heard that the road north of Tortilla Flat is now closed due to a collapse, but the road from the south by Canyon Lake is open and fun to drive.

Tortilla Flat is one of those destinations that everyone should visit at least once. There is one restaurant, one patio bar/BBQ with some food items, museum, an ice cream shop/general store and gift shop. Bar stools inside are made of saddles. The regular band that plays outside is good and does a great job interacting with the crowd. All staff that we have interacted with are courteous and friendly. The only draw back is the road to get there, and parking depend on the day and time you go. If you plan to eat, get there early or prepare to wait.

Driving up to Tortilla Flat had absolutely beautiful scenery with multiple pull-offs on the way. The drive up is worth it for the scenery alone, with Tortilla Flat being a great place to get out, stretch, go in the shops and have lunch. We had a great lunch at the restaurant - which if it is busy they give you a buzzer and you can wander around while you wait. The gift shop is nice also. Driving by Canyon Lake is beautiful and we also stopped by Goldfield Ghost Town on the way. Next time we will make time for Lost Dutchman State Park. There is alot to do in this area, highly recommend the drive up to Tortilla Flat!

There's not much to see or do in Tortilla Flat but the drive & stops along the way are definitely worth it. We didn't have the opportunity to eat in either the outside patio or indoor restaurant but did enjoy some gelato from one of the shops. We also managed to find quite a few items to purchase for friends' birthdays.

We stopped here for lunch before going on our Dolly Steamboat cruise. We wandered through the shops and then had lunch in the restaurant. The burgers where great and the ladies bathroom is a hoot! Gotta go just to see the bathroom! There is also an outdoor patio restaurant that has live music. Very crowded but they know how to handle the crowds.

This is the fun, off the beaten path kind of place my husband and I search out. Our friend, a native of Tempe had never been so he went along. It’s a beautiful drive up the mountain, then down into Tortilla Flat, population of 6!!! Not to be missed. Yes it’s touristy…. That’s the fun in it! Original one room school house, now a museum, a silly reenactment of a gun fight, couple of gift shops….. nice things. The best part is the restaurant with authentic theme, dollar bills on every wall from past visitors, ladies room you’ve got to see and outside live music!!! We had a bite to eat and a drink and then got to enjoy the drive back.

Is the road there extremely curvy? How long is the drive from apache junction?
Written 22 March 2018
It's not a drive for the weak. Seriously, it's a lot longer than you would think and it WILL take you a long time. I would allot twice the time that Google maps would tell you, simply because the views are so stunning and you will want/need to go slower than you'd plan. (also, you will want to pull over for pics!) It's a really cool turn around spot, too, if you don't want to do the entire Superstition drive.
