Just climbed to the top of Cathedral after viewing it from all around Sedona for the past 4 years. The hike is steep and definitely NOT for the out-of-shape, but the reward from the top is extraordinary. Will be doing this again soon.

Really fun! Great view, this can look challenging but my dad with bad knees made it up with really no problem. The top is worth getting to.

I thought this was better than Bell Rock. Relatively easy climb. Great views. There was some shade during the climb where you can take a break if you are tired.

We didn't hike it due to such high temps but it was a great sight to see. I can only hope to make a return visit to make the hike.

You can see this rock from highway 179 or from the West Sedona access the crossings and trail. It is very scenic and can give excellent sunrise or sunset views.

Short hike to top gives you a great view over Sedona. Make sure to pay for parking. $5.00. They are always checking. You can always pass your parking fee ticket to next person when uou leave. Make someone's day. The trail is worth the effort....More

This was a fun hike and climb over bare rocks, trying to follow the rock cairns - great view at the end

Wasn't really into hiking in the hot weather, but it was amazing and had spectacular views. I am not a seasoned hiker but thought it wasnt that bad of a hike.

We hiked this steep mile up last week. The views from the top were awesome! It was well worth the effort but you need to be prepared for it.

Excellent opportunity for great views and pictures of a breathtaking landscape. It is hot, north of 100F (a very dry heat as is common in AZ), so take more water than you think you should. Also, begin as early as possible, so you can finish...More

We are going in October. Does anyone know if the "early morning" suggestion due to heat still apply?

I doubt the heat will be as much of an issue in October. But it would still be nice to get an early start to beat the crowds. Parking and be tough if you get there too late.

If the hike is such a 'climb', how is the way down accomplished? A different route? We are late 50's/early 60's and do difficult to mod. difficult hikes in our state parks - not sure how that equates with difficulty level at Cathedral Rock. I want to ensure a great experience.

We didn't actually climb Castle Rock but hiked to it through a state park on the "backside". The hike was very doable for the two of us in our mid 60's and the trail was very enjoyable. Sorry if this is exactly an answer to... More

Thanks for posting. I'm assuming you parked at the Cathedral Rock trail head at Back O Beyond Rd.? Once you reach the base of Cathedral Rock, how long does it take to hike down to Oak Creek. My 10 year old and I don't plan to scramble up Cathedral Rock. We just want to see it, go to it's base and make our way to the creek. Then do you turn around and trace your steps back? Thanks for your help!!

No, didn't park there. Instead, went to the parking lot at Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Day Use site. Off of 89. This gives you access to the opposite side of Cathedral Rock. You won't climb from this approach but you... More
