This is a beautiful spot but once will be enough for me. The very narrow, treacherous dirt road up requires a four wheel drive and for me was quite scary. Once on top, though there is a little water fall and pond that is awesome with view to the Gila valley. However I will not be repeating this trip---be prepared before you go.

Awesome little place best visited when it's not so busy on big weekends or holidays. Recommend a pickup or jeep but I've seen some not so smart people in there in their cars but to each his or her own right. They stock it with fish certain times of the year and it's also full of crawdads. Super high dam with an old rusty cat walk around part of it. Walking trail around to the other side unless you venture across the dam. Check it out if you go to the Gila Valley and want a cool place that's not really that far outta town

Dont let your kids on the dam but if you are older and responsible it is fun to jump off into the water. also go up the road a bit and theres a trail down to a water fall. These rocks are called the pot holes.

Took our pup and made the trip. Road was rough but fun in a F350. Get to the reservoir and wow, wow, how beautifully. We took pup and hiked to the falls. Just breathtaking. Highly recommend making the drive.

Frye Mesa Reservoir is much closer to Safford, AZ than the top of Mount Graham. It's about 10 miles on a rough, dirt road on Forest Road 103 and it takes about 45 minutes to get to the top. Although we didn't fish, we are told there is plenty of rainbow trout in the reservoir, stocked courtesy of AZ Game & Fish. There is hiking around the reservoir and a beautiful waterfall on the back side. We visited in the winter and found it surrounded by snow, however I'm sure it would be perfect to cool off in after a hot, desert hike in the summer. This is definitely worth the trip!

I have love this place since I was a Kid. When my GrandFather would take me up there usually by Horse. Telling me how when he was a young boy he would drive cattle from his Dad"s Ranch near Winkelmen to their place in Klondike. It used to be a Great view of the Valley. My Mother's Family being the first to settle here after the Civil War where they they staked a Claim before anyone under the Homestead Act.. What now is San Jose and beyond . The town of Sanchez which has the first school in AZ and the First Post Office. The Mormons and The Mining Company have been trying to take it from them since they have arrived. You once could look at the Valley and the Beautiful Black Hills at one time from here. Now all you can Look at is the destruction and wiping out of the Black Hills from the New Mine as well as the once Great Gila River reduced to a very small river because of how much water the Mine Uses. It's Very Sad to See and Realizes how much has been destroyed here. Wonder when the Towns of Pima,Thatcher and Safford will be engulf by this Mine like the Town of Morenci as been time and time again so that Mine can become bigger. Soon very soon I think.

It wasn’t a scary ride at all, it was beautiful seeing the towns around in the distance. Mount Graham and Frye Mesa, absolutely beautiful! Well worth the drive up the mountain.
